Black dresses is always so classy and elegant you can never go wrong with black dresses, it's not like they will have on black dresses, black nails and lipstick, then it would be depressing. lol. One thing you will learn while planning your wedding is everyone will have an opinion and not everyone will agree with your descions but you have to do what you love, and when they get married they can do their wedding their way.

As a wedding photographer, I see no problem with having your bridal party in black (the groomsmen are in black so why would it be depressing to have the gals in black too?)

I do love the idea of a color accent because that will make your photos really fun. The other great thing about having everyone wear a black dress, is that if you are having your girls buy their own dresses, then at least it is more likely to be something that they wear again.

When my best friend got married 5 years ago, she had us all wear black, and I still wear that dress when I go out to cocktail hour!

Honestly, I think black is a fantastic color for bridesmaids. My BMs are all very different shapes and sizes, and black looked lovely on all of their figures and with all of their skin tones.

Here is a picture of them with my getaway car:

They carried hot pink bouquets as well--to add a splash of color Smiley smile

I just shot a black and white theme wedding, bridesmaids were wearing black, even little flower girl had a black with white dress on.

It look absolutely fantastic with bride in white and girls in black.

If you have a themed wedding that would match (and black usually goes with any solid color) then you should be good.

It looks simple yet very elegant.

    Good luck!

Arani- It is becoming almost common to have bridesmaids in black, especially at an evening wedding! They usually have a pop of color in a sash, shoes, and flowers. How about fuschia? It's kind of a reddish, dark pink and is really beautiful with the black. If you add a cool lime green to the palette, it will brighten the color and look very stylish. I'm sure your family thinks it will be too dark, but if you use lighting at the reception in the fuschia or lots of twinkle it will brighten the mood. I have pictures on my website if you want to see it. Good Luck and stick to your guns!

I think that black dresses for the bridesmaids make the wedding very elegant! And adding a bit of color, either with the shoes, flowers or a sash can help make the wedding look brighter. I personally have chosen black dresses for my bridesmaids. And I just found some red & black heals at White House/Black Market that I would like them to wear. That way the guys can wear all black with red ties to match the girls.

I want my BM's to wear black dresses with apple green accent colors. My mother is trying to talk me out it. The wedding is like 3 years away and she's already starting. I think I'm going to keep my colors I know everyone will look very elegant. So yes...Black is okay.

I personally love black bridesmaid dresses. But another wedding planner made a great comment about them on WW recently. The color can sometimes be too harsh for some skin tones. She recommended pewter. Some of the examples she posted were gorgeous.

Just something to consider. Best Wishes!!

I wore black for my friend's wedding about 1 1/2 years ago for a summer wedding and it looked great! Her colors were pink and black with some orange. All the BM dresses had a pink sash and the flowers were pink.

I never really got the whole "black is depressing" thing. Everybody loves a black dress! It's elegant and sophisticated. Just don't pair the dresses with this hat and you'll be fine:

Do it!!! I stood up in a wedding in March of 2008 and we work black dresses that came about mid-calf (the tea length dresses) and it looked very classic. Not to mention we can wear the dress again for a formal gathering. I mean what girl can't use a little black dress?!?

I am not a photographer, but the black dresses I have seen, while amazing in person, had a tendency to just be a big mass of black in photographs. Granted, this is my opinion. My best friend just got married in October, and the BM dresses were black with a white cut-away and a small jeweled accent. However, when all the girls were together, their heads were the most prominent portion of the photo. Just some things to think about. Maybe checking out potential photographers and gauging their response first may help. Good luck!

I wore a black dress as a bridesmaid years ago. It was a winter wedding and the dress was a slender, full length black velvet. It was gorgeous and I actually have worn it at a few times since. It's my go-to dress for an elegant New Years Party dress.

It is the only bridemaids dress I have worn more than once.

Most definitely DO! It's a great color for them to wear. Black is so versatile and works perfectly with so many different colors!

It flattering on all body types and skin colors and a huge bonus is that your bridesmaids most likely happily wear their black dresses long after the wedding.

Be aware that depending on how formal or informal the wedding is, will dictate how long or short the black dresses should be. Here is a guide to different Black Bridesmaids Styles and when to wear the different lengths.
