Bird houses for centerpieces? yes or no?

brandi, on July 31, 2011 at 1:31 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 24

I seen a picture of bird houses decorated nicely and used as ccenterpieces. I was thinking about doing this to go with our 'love birds'/country theme. The only thing I dont like about it is that the people sitting on the other side of hte table would be looking at the back of it (round tables). Do you think this would be stupid? Any other ideas for centerpieces?

I think you have to factor in cost. Aren't most birdhouses going to cost between $15-35 each? I think it's a cute idea- but make sure it's cost effective. Try to catch clearance sales, since summer is coming to a close.

I shot a wedding with bird cages, bird houses, etc. as the theme. It was gorgeous. She did a lot of moss and rocks around iron birdcages with simple flower arrangements that included sticks and whatnot. She did actually have a few real doves inside the pieces that weren't on food and guest tables. Very elegant and gorgeous.

Are you stuck on the bird house idea or would you be open to doing bird cages? It'll have the same effect and it'll be much more inexpensive. Michaels has a bunch of different sized cages for you to look at.

I was going to suggest bird cages also they have a better look because every side can look the same love both the houses and cages tho if you were set on the houses i would sugest maybe two back to back?

Haha Mrs. Clark ... I wouldn't recommend putting real birds in them. My dad had a small bird for a number of years. They're very loud & once they're 'spooked' they just whistle constantly & feathers get everywhere. fake birds would work beautifully though!!

Yeah, I agree with Kimi. That's what I'll be doing for my wedding... using decorative birdcages for decor, as well as to put our table numbers at the top of it. I was toying with the idea of putting potpourri and a candle inside the birdcages, to spruce them up, but I haven't tested this theory out yet. I'd also have floral arrangements next to the birdcages. You could add ribbons to coordinate with your colors to the birdcages, too. Smiley smile

@Agata: Candles would be a neat idea! My only concern with potpourri would be that the scent could be a little strong.

@Mrs. Clark: hahahaha okay I misunderstood! I just pictured all these little birds going apesh*t in the cages while everyone ate dinner lol

If I sat at a table with real birds freaking out in the middle, they might "escape" with my assistance..lol

@Kimi... I thought the same thing, which is why I would probably let it air out for a few days before use.

You can also see through the bird cages. I think you'd have to either use a small bird house or a bird cage, otherwise people won't be able to see each other across the table or keep up a conversation.

Thanks ladies. I guess the bird houses arent such a good idea. I really didnt want to use the cages for centerpieces though. Im using a cage for a card holder.

Could you do a bird's nest? You could use almost like a wood stump as a base and for height and then rest the moss/twig nest on top with bird eggs in it. You could put candles around it it at the bottom. Just an idea if you want to play up the bird theme without using bird cages.

Im doing little birdhouses for my table #s. Got them for 1$ each at Michale's...stained them...hand painted designs on them and will be putting feathers on them...some sort of ribbon and using moss on the inside of them =) they are small...still can use the birdhouse idea...but it isn't too much

Maybe the cages on the tables and the birdhouses as decor i.e. next to the guest book, at the seating card table. Good luck.

I found these two pictures online. This wedding had the whole love bird theme too. I like how they did their centerpieces with some nests, and some with lanterns with different things in them. And if you don't want to use the lanterns, the bird cages with different things in it would look good too. Oh and instead of using a pillow for the ring bearer, they used a nest.

Yea I will probably just use the bird houses for other decor and figure something else out for the centerpieces. I didnt want to over do it with the birds nest though, I am using a nest for the ring bearer pillow (will post a pic). My venue doesnt allow open flame and flamless candles are expensive, unless I use the tea lights or small votives.
