Best man wants me to chip in for groomsman’s hotel???

Gen, on April 12, 2019 at 4:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

Ok this is super ridiculous and there is a context to it but it’s CRAZY. Surprise bachelor party was supposed to be tonight and tomorrow. Best man and 1 groomsman were flying in from across the country. Best man’s flight was delayed 3 hours, groomsman’s flight was cancelled and rescheduled. His options were to take a flight that would land at 12am in New Jersey or 6pm in New York City. We all said 12AM IN NEW JERSEY, WE WILL PICK YOU UP THEN (if you don’t live in this area you don’t understand how basically impossible it is to drive to La Guardia.....) anyway he didn’t listen and booked the flight to New York City. So now he’s saying he just wants to stay in New York City for the night because he doesn’t want to bother coming to New Jersey so late. So best man asked in the group chat (group chat is groomsmen and me, because we were helping coordinate the surprise) if we would all chip in for groomsman’s hotel. He then texted me separately saying that I don’t HAVE to chip in, but it would be nice.

Obviously this is completely ridiculous, I have no idea why anyone should pay for his hotel other than him??? Especially not me, I’m not a groomsman, I’m just helping to coordinate the surprise for FH........ and by the way, I actually already DID book them all a hotel room in New Jersey using my own Marriott points. So I actually have ALREADY contributed to a hotel room for the rest of them. No idea why it makes sense to ask ME, the bride, to contribute to a SECOND hotel room for the freaking BACHELOR party. (groomsman also makes 6 figures so money is NOT an issue for him, which it is for me, but that’s besides the point...)

Anyway, it’s been such a rough day dealing with all this and work that my brain is so fried and I cant even figure out how to articulating nicely saying “no I’m not chipping in for the hotel room” please help me with words 😭

Just be direct. Let him know you're so glad he made it on a flight, but that you've already booked hotels in Jersey and don't have any more points to spare.

I would straight up say "nah"

Lol. It's super ridiculous. If you want to be nicer than that, just tell him it's not possible with the wedding being so close and paying for everything else.

Omg! You're totally right! There should be no expectation for you to make any contribution beyond what you already have!

This makes NO SENSE. Unless 6pm was a typo, omg that’s so early! He can make it to NJ for dinner. Tbh I’d personally respond to the request to chip in by suggesting they all chip in for a cab or an Uber instead ...seriously can’t be much more than a city hotel for the night.

Like it’s not that late and it’s a matter of missing half the party??? That’s nutty. Hahaha sorry I’m so stuck on his dumb plan I don’t even know how to process the asking you to chip in part.

Tell him “Sure. And it would be nice if you offer to help pay for the honeymoon suite.”

I absolutely would NOT pay for a separate room for him in the city. Its not that hard to take the train to New Jersey and if he lands at 6pm he will still arrive in New Jersey in pla t of time to party the night away....

Just tell him what you already told us--that you've already used your points for a room in New Jersey!!

No point in beating around the bush about it. Just tell him straight up.

I would just tell it how it is and say what your thinkingSmiley smile I would be livid the fact if my FH best man did this and asked me that ceap. I mean clearly, if he didn't have the funds to book an hotel then maybe he shouldn't of went that route.

I would say it makes no sense to book another hotel if there’s one already booked in of booking New Jersey. I’ll tell him to save the money from the hotel and instead grab an Uber and meet you all at Jersey.

Since he took a different flight than what was agreed upon, it's on him.
