Best advice & questions to ask venues

Chelsea, on July 5, 2019 at 1:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
Hi all!

I am newly engaged and we are diving into planning before summer ends!!
We are going in a couple weeks to tour a few wedding venues (ceremony&reception). We are in love with an area 4 hours from our home so it is important we get as much out of our visits at the venues as possible while we are there face-to-face. I also want to be thorough so we can get all the details and make a decision before the end of summer. I am about to start the last year of my Masters degree and I will be swamped! I'd like to get this big decision out of the way so I wont have to worry. MY POINT.....
I am making a bit of an interview sheet/check list on questions I need to ask and details I need to figure out when we tour later this month. What advice do you have on picking venues? What did you learn when you and your partner were picking? What would you have done differently? What important questions should I ask?
Thank you all so much!

I would ask your fh if he wants an area to get ready as well. I was applied by the amount of venues that offered him and his groomsmen a closet to get ready in. The venue we ended up choosing has an entire area with a pool table and mini fridge for the guys. I would also say to figure out the amount of people you are inviting before actually touring that way you know exactly what guest count you need a venue to hold.

I agree with all of this. These are some other questions that were important to us. Some of them seem like common things that you should know before you even tour a venue, but some people do next to no research before doing visits.

1.) What is included? Tables, chairs, linens, etc?

2.) Will an employee or coordinator be on site the day of the wedding?

3.) What is the cancellation/date change policy? Will you need to pay a new deposit?

4.) How many hours do you have the venue for? What time to what time?

5.) Can you decorate or drop off items the day before?

6.) Can you rehearse at the venue? Is there an additional fee?

7.) Do they have preferred vendors? Are you required to use them?

8.) Can you bring in your own alcohol?

9.) Can you hire outside catering?

I agree- keep your guest list and budget in mind when touring venues. Will grandma be able to make it up these stairs? Will we be able to fit everyone?

My biggest suggestion would be to ask about inclement weather policies. A friend of mine learned that the hard way with her wedding.

These are all really great things to ask about. I'd also recommend seeing if they have photos of previous weddings held at the venue, and/or recommendations for how to use the venue.

I just had my first venue walk through and had no idea what to ask either!! I actually ended up signing up for this service called Salud where you get to email a wedding planner for advice and it's been so helpful cause I know I can't afford to hire a full service one. My planner gave me this super helpful list of questions of what to ask and I just printed it and took it with me! I did their free trial for 30 days and now I'm hooked haha so worth it. If you wanna check it out its www.momentstosalud.com Good luck!
