Being In Wedding Party vs. Being a Guest

Lisa, on September 25, 2024 at 10:13 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 5
There are so many fun parts to being in a wedding party! Celebrating with your friend getting married, planning and attending the pre-wedding events, getting ready with the rest of the wedding party before the ceremony, walking down the aisle, and the honor that comes with being asked to be in the wedding.

However, there are also some drawbacks: the costs (buying or renting specific attire, chipping in for the pre-wedding events, etc), potential drama between wedding party members, feeling obligated to participate in pre-wedding events, and possibly wearing attire in a style or color that you might not like.

Many people love being included in a wedding party and don't mind the downsides, but others may prefer to just be a guest instead.

Do you enjoy participating in someone else's wedding party? Or do you prefer to witness weddings as a guest?

I’ve been in 10 weddings, and after a while I said I’m not going to be in any others but mine! I’ve loved being in the wedding parties, but it definitely gets exhausting after a while.

Oh my gosh, same! I have been in over 20 weddings, and I finally just said that’s it, I’m not ever gonna be in another wedding again unless I get married! Then, the very next year, my brother decides to get married 🤦🏼‍♀️ So of course I couldn’t say no to that wedding. Then one of my best friends in the world got remarried, so I got roped in again! So now I’ve changed the stipulations to “I’ll only be in this list of people’s weddings” 😆

I totally hear you on this! Wedding parties are fun, but after so many, it can become a bit tiring. 10 weddings is a lot to be in!

WOW, 20 weddings is a lot! I totally understand creating a short list of weddings you're willing to be a wedding party member of and passing on the rest.

I was only in my sister's wedding, that that was purely out of her perceived obligation.

Personally, I am hoping to foster relationships with people who feel I am worthy of joining their wedding party. There's been a lot of heartbreak over the years, where I was overlooked. One friend of many years even excluded me from attending the ceremony when other friends were invited. I was reception only.

Costs and other demands aside, I just want to be important to a special friend and show my support. It doesn't seem to be wanted, historically.
