Band with Engagement Ring, Separate Band for Wedding?

Shaina, on December 27, 2016 at 9:26 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I'm finally engaged!! He proposed for Christmas, and bought a ring that I absolutely adore! It came with a band, but it is not the band that we plan to use for the wedding. He had this in mind when he bought the set, because we will probably put together something from family jewelry to be made into my wedding band.

Is it complete taboo to wear the band that came with it as more of an "engagement set" since it isn't going to be used or worn as my actual wedding band later?

I was thinking of having them soldered together so that it wouldn't seem so much like separate rings and could be more of a single piece.

What do you all think??

@Jenna, I thought about that as well, which is why I'm considering having the two soldered together. I will wear the WB first, with e-ring on top, and probably this band on top of that, just because of the way it is made and the looks of it, so it wouldn't be used at all in the ceremony, just added later.

To me, though, adding the WB itself (especially if we incorporate family heirlooms into it like we're planning to do) is what will hold the meaning along with the promise made with it during the ceremony, rather than whether it's the second or third ring.

This may be coming from a naivety or from a lack of planning - I was never one who envisioned my wedding day as a little girl, or dreamed of my perfect ring / dress / etc. lol. I never even thought anything of it until I started dating my FH and started getting excited about the event itself, still not too worried about the material details, if that makes sense.

Don't wear the separate band until you're married. I, too, have an engagement ring that came with an extra band. I'm not wearing it yet Smiley smile

I think it's totally fine to wear them together if that's what you like. You got them at the same time, so it's like they're both your engagement rings. and like you said, your wedding band will stand out from these two and you'll be putting that on when you get married, so that will be your actual wedding ring.

Your rings are gorgeous by the way!!! Love them!

Also, it looks like the separate band is on the top. The wedding ring should go under the ER so it's closer to your heart, so I think it's fine to wear it now as is!

Sell the extra band or trade it in to the jeweler who will make your wedding band from family pieces.

I think it would be fine if your really wanted to solder it on top like it is now. From your post I'm guessing you are planning to keep it like that forever and have your wedding band under it when the time comes. I think that is fine

I'm doing this. My ering is super narrow and so is the matching wedding band. FH bought me a diamond eternity ring as my wedding band. Here is a pic of all three. I'm wearing the ering and matching wedding band as my ering because they have been soldered into one ring. When we get married next year, I'll wear all three.

In my opinion, it is personal preference.

@angela there is no *right way* to wear your rings. Yes there is the "wedding ring closer to your heart"

But there is also "engagement ring first and the wedding band seals in the promise"

    It's a personal preference.

    I prefer the second one.

It's a wedding band. If you don't wish to use it as *your* wedding band, I would sell it or save it as an anniversary band or when you have children.
