Backyard wedding

Natallie, on January 2, 2020 at 3:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 5
Need advice on a backyard wedding. We live in an apartment and didn’t know if we could rent an Airbnb or how to go about it?

I have friends who did that. They rented a tent and got catering. 2 things: though you can have some large houses, even estates posted on Airbnb. BUT not all allow events let alone weddings. So make sure whoever you pick does allow that
Also, the friends who did do it, had cops called on them 3 times. Finally cops came at 10pm and shut the wedding down due to noise complaints from neighbors. Which was awful... So inquire if this could happen or had happened before

I believe that Airbnb has banned parties/events at their rental properties. VRBO might be more lenient, but I'm not entirely sure.

Agree that you need to research specific properties and services VERY thoroughly -- and even then, you'll need to be okay with glitches you didn't foresee! Many properties do not allow parties/events, and even if the owner says it is okay, if the municipality where the property is located has any regulations about it, your event can be shut down regardless of what the property owner agreed to (near us, most of the towns have laws that don't allow parties/events in short term rentals in residential neighborhoods to protect the rights and comfort of the property-owning neighbors). As a pp mentioned, even without those types of regulations, if neighbors complain about noise, traffic, whatever, the local police can shut you down as a nuisance. Also, I've read at least two posts on this site from brides who had their Airbnb owners CANCEL their booking with very short notice.... That is always a possibility and you won't have any recourse except having your payment returned -- which won't be super helpful if you're scrambling to find a new venue a week or two before the wedding. Sometimes it works out, but there are lots of potential pitfalls you need to prepare for. Good luck!

As far as I know, AirBnB and VRBO have banned any times of events. Have you looked into local community houses instead? They are typically much cheaper and have more space for guests since they don't have beds and big furniture in the way. Most do have tables and chairs though.

I'd check town/city/county regulations and see if it's possible. A lot of places don't allow large events at rental homes. Then I'd see if you can find a large home in your area that will allow a large gathering, and if they have enough bathrooms, power, lights, etc. for a wedding. Then I'd see if you'd have enough room for a backup space in case you got bad weather.
