Awkward in wedding dresses

cbrown8, on July 12, 2017 at 8:02 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

I've been in over 10 weddings, so I was really excited to start my search for a wedding dress... But I went shopping for the first time yesterday and I cannot seem to feel comfortable wearing a wedding dress. I went with my sister just to try different styles, but it just felt like I was playing dress up. I thought putting on wedding dresses would make me feel beautiful, but instead I felt totally awkward.

Anyone else experience this? How can I start to see myself as a bride rather than a bridesmaid?

Have you taken some time to think about what kind of dress you want? Before I went dress shopping I browsed through a few bridal magazines, I was on David's Bridal's website, and Pinterest looking at dresses and deciding what I liked and what I didn't. Maybe if you give yourself a clearer picture of what you're looking for, you'll be able to put on dresses that make you feel beautiful.

Maybe you might feel your best in a dress that isn't your typical wedding dress and should give some other kinds of dresses a try?

I felt a little awkward in mine, even though I loved it, until I had alterations done. Once it fitted me properly it made a world of difference - I felt much less like a small girl playing dress ups in my mom's clothes when the dress wasn't a foot too long for me.

Were you able to try on multiple styles? I think if you keep shopping you may get more comfortable. I mean, who wears wedding dresses regularly? Its not abnormal to feel weird in a dress but try to see what features you like and which you don't while you are in them and your consultant may be able to find one you feel good in!

Did you try on different silhouettes/styles? There's bound to be one you'll feel beautiful in. It also seems to me that some may need to see the dress on them with accessories or a veil to feel like a bride.

I felt the same exact way. I was not emotional at all. I just picked the one I liked the best. It helped that my mom, FMIL and MOH all agreed. I highly recommend trying several different styles, as my body looked completely different in each. Also, the corset they put me in when I tried dresses on did nothing for my figure, so keep that in mind as well!

I felt the same way. I don't wear dresses much at all. I wear dress pants to work. So doing the wedding dress shopping was very awkward. In fact I fought the dress that I actually bought. But as time went on I fell in love with my dress. Looking at dresses online prior to shopping helped. Also me coming to terms with the fact that I didn't feel comfortable in dresses really helped too! This can be normal!!!

I felt exactly the same way the first time I put on a wedding dress. It was big and awkward, and I felt weird walking in it. Continuing to try on different dresses helped. I ended up getting an even bigger dress with a longer train than the first dress, but I feel totally comfortable in it.

@cuervo @jennv @mrsmack I tried a bunch of different styles and fabrics so I could get a feel for what might be the best direction to go in. I've looked online a bunch and have tons of dresses on my Pinterest board, I'm just having a hard time putting myself in those dresses if that makes any sense??
