Average DJ prices

Samantha, on April 11, 2011 at 12:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I am wondering what the average DJ prices are for the chicago area. We are getting married in Naperville and looking for a DJ to do a wedding reception for 5.5 hours under 600. Is that unreasonable?

National average is $1500. In my city, I can find them from $400- 2700.

But (to a point) you get what you pay for. If you go with a much cheaper DJ, you may not get everything you really want/need. Will they provide sound for the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception? That may require 3 seperate sets of equipment.

A good DJ will spend about 20+ hours BEFORE the event, meeting with you, putting together a good playlist with transitions, etc. To most people- they think they are paying for music for 5 hours. It's much more than that.

You can find someone for under $600, but you'll be sacrificing quality and experience.

My DJ was actually 1,800. That included ceremony, coctail hour & reception for a total of 6 hours for a DJ & MC. However, I got a $ 500.00 discount since he was a referral from my planner. So it is now only costing me $ 1,300.

I would try Awesome DJ's. The owners name is Randy and he is awesome. They are in Glen Ellyn in the same plaza as the Abbington. (We are using him for our reception at the Abbington)

Ours is $1020 for a five hour reception and our ceremony music. We saw cheaper but this guy has spectacular ratings and we definitely wanted a DJ that would do a great job.

I'm paying 400 for 5 hour reception, prep/clean up, and if we want an extra hour no charge..he does it on the side, I've gotten good referrals, and I like his philosophy regarding weddings when we talked and he answered my questions in a way that seemed very knowledgeable..however my brother's friend is hiring my DJ for his wedding in May..I plan on asking how it went, if there were any problems/super corny (lol) I have no qualms about losing my 200 deposit..a DJ can make or break your reception.

    Meghan-

The guy that I am using for my dj...I have already met with him, seen his equipment..He is providing lights as well.... he also has Great reviews. Its just my wedding I am only having 55 guests and he said that because its smaller and on a sunday thats what he will charge me..He said normally he is $1800.00

Anyway, in some cases yes I would absolutely agree with you that prices that low may mean not good quality sound speakers etc...but that doesnt mean its ALWAYS that case. I just so happened to get lucky...I actually found that Dj on this site... ...

if he ends up not being a good dj I will let you know...He was also on the local news in ca..helped out a woman in need who lost her mother to cancer and couldnt afford a wedding...not all djs are a-holes and after money..some are people who enjoy doing it for fun and not after the dollar sign

Though my DJ I guess is on the expensive side, I love him and I coudlnt trade him for the world. For the $1700 I get a dj, MC and lighting so I cant complain. Hope everyone has an amazing wedding!

Our DJ will only be $300 for 4 hours. He IS an old friend of my FH but that isn't too far off what he normally charges. He has done well over 30 weddings as well as other events. SO here is hoping he knows what he is doing pretty well Smiley smile I think he is still trying to build up his business and get his name out, but I am trusting that with that many weddings he at least has a good handle on the process. All his paperwork and emails have been very professional and detailed so far Smiley smile

Brides: When choosing your entertainment for your wedding, you will find $300 djs, $3000 djs, and everything in between. The most important factor when choosing entertainment for your special day is to see if your DJ is a good fit. So before you break out the checkbook remember one thing. This is your wedding. You only get one shot. Make it count.
