August Wedding with Tent or without?

Lorena, on May 22, 2018 at 1:38 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 20

I am having a small crisis! My wedding is August 18th this year in nothern va, and it can be pretty hot during that time. I have a tent rental saved but now I am facing the possibility I might have more guests due to the spanish nature of my family! I do not mind paying more but I really want to avoid it. My sister thinks I should just have a small tent for the dance floor and have the tables outside in the sun... Is this a good idea?? or should I just pay for a bigger tent? HELP!

I would say have a tend that everyone can fit under, and eat under. It can be REALLY uncomfortable in direct sunlight, particularly for a meal.

I think you need to provide shade for all of your guests..... They will get hot, sweaty and sun burned and end up being quite uncomfortable.

The average highs in Virginia in August are about 90. You need to figure out a plan for air conditioning. Then very last thing you need is a guest with heat stroke. Guests will be sweaty and that's not enjoyable in nice clothing. Unless the tents are air conditioned, not just fans that would do nothing but move hot air around, you need to figure out another indoor plan

Not only do you need tents, but you need some kind of cooling device. Summer in NOVA is hot and HUMID. Just a tent wouldn't cover it IMO.

NOVA in August? Even out in Loudoun County you need a tent. There isn't enough breeze, it will be host, and summer storms happen.

I would. My cousin got married in Colorado in late June, and the ceremony was SO hot without a tent. Everyone was so thankful for the tent for the reception. He had ice water and white wine out but it wasn't enough with the blazing sun.

Definitely need a tent big enough to cover everything, and as others have said the temps could be extremely uncomfortable. I attended a wedding last year in 90+ degree heat and no tent. It was just the ceremony and I was absolutely miserable. Someone passed out and an ambulance had to be called. I changed outfits for the reception because I was drenched in sweat and left the reception early because even though the reception was indoors and air conditioned, I felt ill. Honestly if I'm ever invited to an outdoor wedding again in that kind of heat, I will most likely decline.

    That sounds hot.

not only do I think you need a rent large enough to cover all your guests, I think you also need large fans to help keep the air moving if your entire reception is outside .

I'm also having an outdoor wedding in August. I would recommend getting a tent that is big enough to fit all of the guest. It can get very hot sitting out in the sun, good luck!

Rental places usually have air conditioners (big fans) that they can add to the tent. You tell them your guest count and they can recommend tent size. They also have a tent size calculator online. For me the bright sun and the heat is worse than just feeling the heat. So i'd definitely take precautions don't want anyone passing out in the heat or getting sun burned.

Also, if its in a large outside area and turns out to be hot and no storm maybe you can add mist machines.

You're going to have some miserable guests if they're forced to sit in the direct sunlight throughout the evening. Splurge on the larger tent.

I am getting married outside on August 18 as well in Nebraska. Talk about HOT AND HUMID!!!! My wedding is outdoors, and the guest area is shaded luckily and my reception is indoors. But if you are having your reception outdoors as well I would get a tent that is bigger.

Get a tent big enough for everyone to sit under. Get some cooling devices, too!! Save your money someplace else. Trust us.....NO ONE wants to sit in the sun and eat.

Hi Lorena! Welcome to the WeddingWire Community! Smiley ring Sorry to hear about this! I would definitely recommend having a bigger tent, particularly for weather concerns. Guests could also experience more exposure to bugs and insects.

Have you tried browsing our Vendor Search for potential tent rentals? I would definitely use it.

Here is a list of event rentals that could possibly help you find a bigger tent:

    Good luck!
