Assigned Seating for Buffet?

#mattsmrs18, on May 5, 2016 at 10:24 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 50

Is it appropriate to assign my guest seats for a buffet lunch wedding? The wedding itself is a 115 person semi-formal Sunday lunch wedding and while I love the idea of themed tables, I don't want to be restrictive on my guests.

I plan to do assigned tables, not seats.

Assigning at least tables is always best with a large group. It's a lot easier for guests to not have to worry about finding enough empty seats at a table for their family or circle and it saves you money, since unassigned seating leads to more gap spaces and you have to have more tables to account for that.

I would definitely recommend you assign tables to a wedding with 115 people.

Yes, as PPs said just assigned tables is fine. I will also have a buffet and am doing this.

Even if its a buffett, it will probably be much easier on everyone if you at least do table assignments.

I wouldn't necessarily specify where each person at the table needs to sit, but table assignments make life SO much easier for everyone involved.

Hi Ansley, welcome to WW! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default icons) so that we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other posters. You can do this on a desktop computer or a mobile browser (just not on the app) under My Settings and Profile and Privacy Settings.

I agree with the previous posters that assigned tables might be best!!

Assigned tables. I think people should be able to choose who they sit next to.

Since I've been on WW I've noticed 98% of people say that assigned seating/tables are the way to go. I've never been to a wedding that had anything assigned. Formal/informal, big/small weddings everything has been a free for all. While planning my wedding I haven't even though about it. It just seems like an added stress, which isn't to say that after the wedding I won't regret not doing it. I understand wanting people to be around others that they get along with and keeping couples together, but at a few of the weddings I've been to it has been nice to be around people that I haven't met before. I was able to learn their relationship to the couple and get to know people that I otherwise might not have ever talked to.

Table assignments like the other ladies mentioned would work best. I am having a buffet and were are just assigning tables.

Yes, definitely assign tables. We assigned tables for our wedding of 48 guests. I would absolutely assign tables for 115 guests. This topic has come up MANY times in the past week. Search for the previous threads for more insight.

Another vote for assigned tables. Assigning specific seats at a table is not necessary, since catering staff delivering the right meal choice to the right person is not a factor in a buffet.

Assigned tables is the best way to go for a buffet.

Yes, it's important even for a buffet. Can you imagine carrying your plate(s) back to a table then realize the seats are taken?

Michelle, we mixed people up and got a lot of great feedback about it. It wasn't stressful at all. I am with you, it's fun to sit with people you don't know Smiley smile

We'll have about that number as well (assuming all goes according to plan) and I plan to assign tables for our buffet. I've been to ones without assigned tables and it's so confusing

@Karen, while buffets aren't as formal as plated dinners, they can still be a part of a semi-formal wedding. I've been to plenty of weddings with everyone in semi-formal attire and an elegant atmosphere, and the buffet didn't feel out of place.

I would assign tables but not necessarily seats. People like knowing where they're supposed to sit, and themed tables are fun!

Karen, buffets can still be done very elegantly. I don't know what you have against them, but they are not as horrible and evil as you seem to think they are.

I'm doing assigned tables. If you have open seating then you need more seats than guests since not all tables will be full.
