Asking step-uncle to play music at wedding?

Andrea, on July 8, 2019 at 4:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4
I was discussing my ceremony music plans with my stepmother recently. My plan was to hire a soloist to play music as people are seated and for the bridal party as we walk down the aisle. She immediately told me that I should ask her brother to play his guitar. My step-uncle is the nicest guy ever and happens to be a very talented guitarist who has played in some well-known rock bands. I’d love for him to play, but I don’t want him to feel like I invited him only so he could play music for everyone. He was invited because we want him there. The other thing is that I’ve only seen him about a dozen times in the past 4-5 years (since my dad married his sister), although we get along quite well! She insists that he’d be thrilled to play for our wedding and would be happy if we bought him some good beer as payment, but I just feel weird about asking him. What do you think?

I don't think it's weird. If he's a musician he has probably been asked before. Tell him you want him as a guest but you'd also like to hire him as a vendor, if he's interested.

I don't think it's weird either. I would definitely ask! My brother played in my cousin's wedding. He still felt like a guest but got to be included in a special way.

That’s what I figured! She said he’d probably feel more comfortable playing guitar than having to make small talk with others. I think I’ll go ahead and ask him!

That’s exactly what I want! I’d rather have someone I know and like a lot to play a part in my wedding than a stranger. Thank you!!
