Asking for wedding dress alterations quotes?

Amber, on June 29, 2020 at 3:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

Is it ok to go to David's Bridal and one more (Quality Alterations in Knoxville TN) and ask both for quotes before committing to one or the other?

I feel like I'm wasting their time but I want the best quality/cost. And will DB do just a quote without committing?

You should always get quotes before you commit to a service. It's how businesses operate so they are used to it, especially for something as important as a wedding.

You won't know until you ask. If they say no, look elsewhere. Even independent seamstresses will help you out if they don't or are too expensive.

It is okay. Do note there ARE places that will charge for a consultation (like, $50 bucks for their time sort of thing), so make sure to ask about that up front !

I think this would really only be okay if you already know what alterations you need and could show them the dress and ask without them taking the time to pin and get super specifics. I feel like they definitely need to see the dress to know, but also know that this would be an estimate not a real quote. I couldn’t imagine having my seamstress go through the effort of pinning everything and then say oh I’m taking it somewhere else to see if they can give me a better price. My appt took an hour and I only needed a hem and bustle for 2 layers.

What might be a better idea is to call seamstresses and just see what their general range is and compare that way. This would help you find out that oh seamstress A charges X-Y for bustles and seamstress B charges Y-Z.

I think it's a good idea to compare quotes - but you'll definitely need to try the dress on in person both places! Just be up front that you're asking for a quote on what services would cost and don't make any promises. Smiley smile
