Asking for Addresses

Kayce, on May 12, 2016 at 9:08 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 44

How exactly have you went about asking for addresses? Should I just ask them or get them myself? A lot of them I can find online but not sure if that's proper etiquette or if they would think its weird that I found their address without asking for it. Maybe I am just overthinking things.

I had my mom and FMIL get the addresses for the family and then I texted all of my friends and FH texted his. It wasn't weird at all because they knew I was getting married and it's for the wedding. It was kind of annoying collecting them all though but at least now I have every person that is important address!

I asked people through fb messaging or call/text. I also used WW "collect address" which sent my guests an email to have them input their mailing address. Pretty simple. I wouldn't google someone's address.

I would ask your parents to ask people or you can contact them yourself.

Side note- when did you start collecting addresses?

I asked the parents to get addresses of family members/friends they wanted to invite.

As for my friends and fiance's friends, we just sent a text asking.

I would just text my guests. They actually got excited about me asking them because they knew they made the guest list cut.

Thanks guys!!! @lauren17 I will probably start collecting addresses within the next couple of weeks. I know I'm probably way early with it but I am so bored at work during the day that I have been trying to get a lot of the major stuff done so I'm not stressing at the last minute

Kayce make sure your only asking people you are for sure inviting. Your still far out and don't want to run into awarkwarness if relationships with people change

Thanks! Good point. I'll only collect family addresses and close friends. When do you think would be a good time to collect the rest?

I started collecting addresses for Christmas cards last November (then never sent them out). But it gave me a good jumping off point.

First, finalize your guest list. Make sure that everyone you get an address for will actually be invited. Then, ask a family member if they have a majority of the family-centric ones. Then ask the rest of your guests - we used texts and phone calls.

If it was someone his fam or mine wanted to invite, we had them give us addresses. All the rest of them we just asked. Don't ask if there's any chance you may have to cut the list and won't send them an invite though.

I had most of my side's addresses since I send Christmas cards every year. I knew we were getting engaged before Christmas so I made sure the people I was planning on inviting were on my Christmas card list.

FMIL gave me the addresses for their side. STDs already went out and some are still missing. It drives me a little crazy but FH doesn't care so he'll have to find them in time for invitations.

For people you are on the fence about. Waiting until about 4-5 months out that will last give you enough time to address them and send them 6-8 weeks before the wedding

Don't collect the rest until you're about to order your save the dates (aka your guest list is 100% final). You might think you have to ask early on, but really, people respond to texts within hours.

So, yes, I texted most of my people. As far as family, my mom and FMIL had most of those.

And to answer your other question, I don't think people would think it was weird you found their address without asking. I would never receive mail and think, but how did they know where I live?! Did they google me?!

I looked at the property appraisers website for people who own their own house. If I didn't have an address I emailed and asked for it.

@Deb - are you in real estate? That's something I never thought of! Great idea

Collecting addresses can be super informal! My mom sends a billion Christmas cards every year, so I just asked for a copy of her address book after Christmas this past year since all the addresses were up to date! For my friends I did WW's collect addresses option (which you can find under the Guest List tool). I've also had a lot of friends send out mass bcc emails!

I called in the moms for this, too. Started there, and then reached out to others.

Also, think if there is anyone in the family who recently sent an invite for something. They might have a good list to start with, like FH's brother is getting married 9 months after us, so we gave them our list so they could grab the addresses they will need.

My mom, FMIL and FH gave me some. The rest that I didn't have, I either texted or Facebook messaged for them.

I used a website called Postable to get them via email and generate a guest list that you can export into a spreadsheet. It was super convenient
