Are You Practicing for the First Dance?

Julia, on January 26, 2018 at 10:05 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 25
I have to be honest and say I'm totally unprepared; I thought I would like to practice with my fiancé once or twice, just because I'm a little clumsy, but I keep dislocating my kneecap and will be going in for surgery to help stabilize it on the 31st.

The doctors say I'll be in an immobilizing cast for a month, then three months of physical therapy. I get married on August 4th of this year.

I hope that I'm just making mountains out of molehills and that it won't be too bad, but I'm just wondering is it normal to practice for the first dance? I don't think I'll have a lot of grace moving around for some time. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I think it is up to the couple, but personally i would feel better knowing what I'm doing since I don't normally dance. But it sounds to me that you will be all healed up about 3 or 4 months before your wedding so I'm sure you will have time to practice if you really want to.

That's true! I think I got myself upset and counted the months wrong. My apologies! Thank you! I'm realizing I think things will be alright

It sounds like you will be healed in about four months. That’s plenty of time before August to learn a dance.

We were huge procrastinators and started dance lessons less than two weeks before our wedding. H had never partnered anyone before, and neither of us knew the type of dance steps we were learning (swing and foxtrot). It was stressful and not perfect, but our first dance was fun for us and our guests. It was not choreographed though - we just learned some steps we could put together, and H learned how to lead me through the steps.

Good luck with your surgery. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

We're talking about getting some practice, nothing big. We just need to decide on the song. Regardless, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful first dance and it'll be great!

I taught DH the box step and we practiced it a few times in our living room. He wasn't even sure he would be up for the first dance because he suffers from anxiety so I mainly wanted him to get used to the song and easing his mind. He decided about 5 minutes before we danced that he was up for it and he did an amazing job so I'm glad we practiced it a few times.

Good luck with the surgery! I think it's normal to practice. I'm worried FH will rip my gown or gown or something so we're gonna practice so he can figure out how to keep his feet away from gown.

Yes, it is pretty normal to practice. My FH is very nervous about the first dance so we will start practicing a month or two before our wedding, so that he isn't so nervous. Good luck with surgery.

First thing FH said after choosing our song was "we should probably practice a bit, we will be dancing with a lot of eyes watching". And I have to agree. Maybe not a lot, but enough to feel comfortable and know what to expect with the song. With you still having almost 3 months post PT, you will have plenty of time to squeeze in a practice dance here and there. I plan to enjoy a glass of wine first to not feel so silly too.
