Are you moving to a new city after your wedding?

Stacy, on June 14, 2013 at 7:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

My FH just got a job in a city that's almost 90 miles away. He needs to move up there asap but I'm staying here to wait on my employer to transfer me to a different location and to finish the wedding planning. We're paying for our wedding so money is extremely tight and moving will be very expensive. I've never moved away from my hometown and I have a lot of anxiety about it. In less than 2 months we're getting married, moving to a new city, and starting new jobs. Anyone else have a similar situation?

Ehhh if you count the next town over lol...we both lived in the same town for about ten or twelve years so a change of scenery would be nice...were both close to our parents (and his kids live here) so we are kinda limited...its not bad...

We wouldn't have any family where we're moving. His closest family would be about 70 miles away. We're both very unfamiliar with the new city.

I moved prior to my first wedding. I looked forward to moving from a tiny town to a bigger city so it was just an adventure for me.

FH will be moving an hour away from his current town and 2 hours from his hometown and closest relative when we get married. He's also moving to a new state. I wish we could split the difference, but it's just not possible right now.

We're not even planning on moving to a new apartment (we're hoping to stay in this one till I'm done with school).

You will be okay! The way I handle moves like that is to turn it into an adventure. I have fun scouring Yelp for new salons and stores, and my partner and I like to explore to find new restaurants and fun little places around our new apartment.

I've moved a lot, but mostly stayed in the same general area (Greater Boston). However, my family has moved very far away--my mom and brother both moved to central MA, my sister moved to California, and now that I don't have a car, it's rough to even see my extended family, who live in the suburbs. However, we use Skype a lot and my local friends are like another family to me Smiley smile

We moved back to his hometown (Naperville, IL suburb of Chicago) back in late October from the area I had always lived in (Iowa). Other than a lot of unforseen car problems, I'm really enjoying my new life here. 90 miles isn't even that far so I think you'll be fine. Embrace it and learn to enjoy the experience!

When I graduated from college I moved in with FH, we live 300 miles from our families right now. and we're looking at apartments tomorrow since there seem to be some structural issues with our building.. I don't mind moving, we'll both be closer to work hopefully, and would like an apt with a dishwasher, but not looking forward to moving 2 months pre-wedding...

I moved across the country on short notice. For a while after, I kept dreaming that I was still packing and getting ready for the move. I figured my brain was just having a hard time keeping up with my body!

Wow! I guess 90 miles really isn't that far. I don't see my family much now and they live less than 20 miles away. I feel like if I move even farther then I will NEVER see them.

We'll probably move back. We moved last October so that I'd be closer to work (about 70-80 miles from where we lived and are getting married), but I lost my job, so we'll be moving back because FH still works there. Once I get a new job, which will probably out of state, we'll move!

We will be moving from IL to NY... he will probably move before me to find a place and then I will move once everything is settled.

I'm moving closer to my FH base, about 60+ miles away, I'm going to have to writ my job move up to base we're going to leave up north for a few weeks weeks come back get settled and then imma have to find a job. I'm really nervous how its going to go.and we're not taking the off base housing they offer, FH and I don't like how close they are together, but luckily houses are pretty cheap around there.

Well I moved from Houston to central New York to be with FH before we even got engaged (I knew we were heading in that direction).

It was terrifying! But it has been a great move for us. My family is in Houston or Denver and his family is in W. Virginia so we are all alone up her. We still get to see them over holidays and truthfully I talk to them all the time.

You just need to get involved and make friends quickly in the new city and that will make all the difference. As soon as I started a job I made friends and I started to love where we are living now.

    Good luck!!!

Stacy, chances are, you'll see your family more now that you've moved! I lived close to my family (like 20 minutes and less) and I see them more now that we've moved!
