Are you announcing your engagement/wedding in the local paper?

Tara, on February 20, 2018 at 3:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14
The other day, my mom asked if we were putting an engagement or wedding announcement in our hometown paper. I thought she was joking, but she was shocked when I told her no.
We're in our mid 20's, so all of our friends and family already know about our engagement through Facebook (even the few without accounts know through the grapevine). We haven't lived in our hometown in almost 7 years. Putting it in the newspaper just seems archaic, repetitive and unnecessary to me.

Oh gosh idk if I would. I would feel awkward having everyone known my life. But then again, maybe you live in a small town?

Technically I'm from a very small town, but the "local" paper is in a larger nearby town. It gets distributed to the 10 surrounding tiny towns. If that makes sense.

My mom just asked me the same thing. I honestly thought it was a joke. Seems odd to me, so I wouldn't do it myself. I won't stop her if she wants to do it though.

I believe this is a tradition prior to social media. My first marriage my mom and dad had our engagement announcement in the paper but there was no FB back then. This time around we are not putting it in the paper.

My daughters are not doing paper announcements. They're actually pretty costly and none of us subscribe to a paper anymore anyway.

That's still a thing? I wouldn't do it, and didn't do it because we live in a populous area, and think it's creepy to have everyone see a photo etc., and it's expensive to run an ad, to boot.

I agree. There's a local paper for the town I grew up in and the 3 neighboring towns, and I have seen engagement and wedding announcements in it, but most of those people still live in those towns. I haven't lived in my home town in like a decade, and don't really keep in touch with anyone from there, so it would have been silly to do. Plus, like you said, with social media, the people that you want to know will know once you post it.

I hadn't thought of doing it until a few months after I was engaged, but I know that I like to go back and occasionally look at it - and honestly the local newspaper could use the content. Would your parents appreciate an easy way to brag about you?

I did the first time in 1994!! Now? No, my parents have passed we no longer live in our hometown. I think my FH's mom wanted to announce it in her church bulletin though!!! LOL! She never did though. I would not have cared if she had done this.

My FH comes from a small town and his mom wanted to out out picture in their paper. It didn’t bother me because they live 3 hours away and I’m not from there lol. However, we didn’t take engagement pics that showed us both facing the camera at the same time (on accident). I didn’t even notice until she pointed it out. So she never ended up submitting it.

My mom put a little announcement in the paper for us. I didn't want to make much noise about it on Facebook. I'm a teacher in the area that gets our local paper, and my students really got a kick out of seeing my photo. We also live in our hometown now, so people like high school teachers and friend's parents saw it. I really don't see the point if I was still living at my old place where no one really knew me.
