Are Wedding Planners Even Necessary?

The Bride, on June 4, 2019 at 12:58 AM Posted in Planning 0 72

As a teacher and full-time graduate school student, there was no way I was going to be able to plan my wedding on my own. After an internet search, I found my wedding planner Cristina. Cristina was a guru who helped me with a range of wedding needs including music selection, venture tours, contract readings, cake tasting, decor, day of coordinating, and more. For my husband and I a wedding planner was absolutely necessary and worth every dime we spent.

Do you believe wedding planners are necessary? Why or why not?

I definitely see the appeal. We decided to get engaged at the same time I was leaving my full time job for a full time doctorate program, so we definitely could not afford the extra expense. We made sure to hustle and get stuff done before I started my program and then did a lot during my winter break. Luckily, our venue's event coordinator has been a dream to work with, and Wedding Wire and and the Knot have been beyond valuable!

With your wedding right around the corner, I'm glad everything worked out for you without a planner.

I didn't go with one but I see that appeal of it. However what I did go with was a day of coordinator because I didn't have a gap between my ceremony and my reception to do the set up myself with my wedding party.

Yeah me either. My reception was directly after my ceremony at the same venue. Luckily I had a venue coordinator and a wedding planner who made sure things went according to plan.

We did not use one because I have a desk job and planned 99% of our wedding during my break times. 30 minutes a day for months is a ton of down time for me. I didn’t consider a planner bc I am comfortable sending emails, reviewing prices and meeting with vendors due to my line of work.

I know teachers don’t have all that time to spare, so I understand your predicament. If I were you, and it was in my budget, I would look into hiring a planner.

I didn’t feel the need for one. I’m a hands on type of girl. My sister and I are pretty resourceful and crafty so I felt we would be able to pull this off on our own. We don’t do this professionally but planning events are kind of a hobby to us. We’ve never done a wedding so it was exciting to try our hand at it.

We didn’t go with one, but I totally see why some people do! I’ve been dreaming of planning my wedding since I was a little girl and have experience planning a lot of events and trips so I knew I wanted to do it all myself. I have all vendors and most of our wedding already planned out, and we only got engaged a little over a month ago! It’s been SO fun! I’m also planning everything for our honeymoon, and that’s been really fun too! 😊 Our wedding & honeymoon will be super nice and fairly inexpensive, but I’ve spent a TON of time doing research to find the best deals.

I didn't think I needed one in the beginning. My FH kept alluding to it because he knows i tend to take on a lot, not just with wedding planning, and can get overwhelmed. We met with a wedding planner for DOC only, but she was so awesome we hired her 6 months out. It worked out, because I switched jobs where I can bring my cell phone in my area. Therefore, I don't have the luxury of checking text and making calls on the fly. It worked out for me, but I can understand how brides want to do it all on their own. It really is a personal preference.

I think it depends on the person getting married, how much free time they have, how organized they can be, the budget and the size of the wedding.

For myself, a wedding planner is out of budget but we’re having a smaller wedding around 50 guests. I keep myself pretty organized on my iPad and I have lots of down time for planning so I think I’ll do just fine without one.

I don't think it's necessary. Is it nice if you have the money, perhaps, but it was not ever a consideration for us Smiley smile

For me, it was 100% NOT worth it! I was honestly excited to plan my wedding. For each couple it's about what they want, need, etc. But for me, my husband, and those who planned along with me (when you're the first child to get married, mom & step mom want to do so much it's crazy lol)

I decided the budget was better spent elsewhere. Our wedding was a hit, and it was all our own creation, which made it even more special. I see the appeal of a planner - especially for those who have never planned a party of this magnitude, or those who just don't have the time or ability - but it's definitely not necessary. If you have the budget for it and want one, go for it! But if you have the ability to plan it yourself or you're worried about the cost, it's not a "need." Smiley smile

Depends. I'm doing 65 people, ceremony and reception are in the same place. It's not necessary for such a small wedding, a planner isn't in my budget, I plan pleanty of events myself.
But if I was in grad school? I'd probably need the help.

For me a planner is so unnecessary & would probably make everything more stressful 😆 I’m a hands on person with a strong vision of what I like & what I want. I’m also detail oriented, organized & excellent (probably better than many planners lol) at researching vendors that work for us, negotiating prices & reviewing contracts. And I really enjoy creative part of wedding planning!

I believe that for a majority people in regular jobs there is enough time to plan, if you leave reasonable time between engagement & wedding & if you know what you want & what you are doing 🙂

From the perspective of someone who has planned her entire wedding by herself, no I don’t think they are. Everything was pretty easy IMO. However, I do think a DOC is necessary...that way there is someone besides the B & G taking care of it all on the day, so the B & G can enjoy themselves.

I completely understand. My planner said I was the most hands on bride she ever worked with, lol.

Funny enough, I never dreamed of a wedding, I just dreamed of being married. My husband wanted the big wedding while I just wanted to sign the papers.
