Are we being mean/unreasonable?

One of my FH's groomsman recently booked his flight for the wedding for himself, his wife and young daughter. They are arriving around 9PM on the Thursday before the wedding. Best man is arriving Wednesday night. After booking his flight, I said to my FH "P (groomsman) knows that he will need to change his hotel reservation so they have a room Thursday night." FH assured me that yes, that is common sense of course. During a recent conversation FH found our that P did not book/ change his room for the night he gets here and expected us to let him stay with us. While I understand why and all; I find it rude to not even ask. Right now we live in a smaller 2 bedroom apartment that is for sure not made to have 6 people and a dog staying in it. P eventually booked his hotel for that night then asked my FH for money for the room! I'm sorry what, no we are spending a ton of money on this wedding. My FH and I are picking up P and his family that night; now for some reason they expect us to have a car seat for their child. We don't have kids, why on earth would we just have a car seat laying around for this type of occasion? And I'm not a parent as previously stated, but don't you need a booster seat or something on a flight or do airlines provide that?? Then P asked if he could just have one of our vehicles to use during the time they are here, like no we do need them. Plus my FH and I are spending the night before the wedding apart so we both need transportation. Are we being mean/ unreasonable? I should also add that the venue we booked (a hotel), rehearsal dinner and even the tux place are within walking distance of each other. Like literally they are blocks away from one another. We did this on purpose so no one would not be able to get to one place. There is also a grocery store, gas station, Subway and Culver's right next to the venue. So they shouldn't need a car, and if they did they can ask for a ride from us or another groomsman..

Oh I completely agree with you! If it was just him coming I don't think I would have a problem with him staying at our place, but their is a huge difference between one male who is generally low maintenance and an entire family. Plus they just told us that his wife and child are both afraid of dogs, we have one. And my dog isn't going anywhere, so I don't see the logic of them wanting to stay. My FH and I had a long discussion about what is going to happen with them and we aren't going to provide them with any of the things they asked for. We have enough going on as it is. They are going to get a free breakfast on Friday, dinner that night and Saturday. After that they are their own. We will offer a ride to the grocery store by the hotel if they want to pick anything up but that is it.

LMAO they knew you had a dog and that his wife and kid are scared of them, yet hes still bringing them and expecting to stay with you...and your dog?? He is not thinking this through! Smiley xd 3 free meals for three people is already super kind of you, so I think that if they can plan for flying with a young child, they can plan on bringing their own car seat with them. I'm sure they already have one right??? lol. Good luck, hopefully they aren't too much of a handful!

They can bring their own car seat and the airline checks it for free. ALL airlines do this, I’m a travel so I am familiar with their guidelines.

Also, in no way are you being rude. I know some people here had mentioned financial hardship, but if that were the case why would he book them an extra night, and also why would he book his wife and daughter as well? If you can afford to bring other family members then you can afford an extra hotel night. No normal person would act this way and assume these things. I actually am angry for you that you have to deal with such a rude and inconsiderate person. I honestly would have told him that they couldn’t stay at your house and that they should change their tickets so they arrive on Thursday instead of Wednesday. Airlines are waiving change fees right now so they can. This is YOUR wedding! And IMO when it comes to weddings it’s more like wedding week vs wedding day. There is so much going on and things you’re dealing with in the days leading up to your big day that playing hostess in your own home should not be forced upon you. You want to be relaxed and enjoy yourself, not stress out about something because of someone else’s issues.

I travel often and work at a major airport. Car seats are checked in for free and do not need to be packed in a box or anything - some airlines will bag it up for you. A small child is not required to be in a car seat on the plane, either. If they are below 2 years old, they are allowed to sit on either parent's lap, which in this case, you mentioned was 5 years old, so the child gets their own airline seat and is perfectly safe strapped in that way.

As for the rest of your story - omg. I would be appalled at all that and find it rude for the BM to assume that you will be accommodating all that for his family! It would feel like he's laying on some sort of vendetta on you for asking him to be the Best Man lol. Rude!

Oh the BM isn't assuming this stuff, it's the groomsman who is. But either way it is very rude of him too. Ok thank you for answering the questions I had about the car seat on a plane, I had no clue how that worked at all!

I completely agree with you. If they can't all afford to come, he should be coming solo and leave his wife and child at home. Which I know sucks, but since these are the circumstances then leave them at home. I know from my FH has told me that groomsman's wife is very controlling and that they got into a screaming match because the groomsman wants to hang out a bit later with my FH and the other guys in the wedding party the night before. They aren't doing anything bad in anyway that night just grabbing a late night pizza, but apparently that isn't acceptable to her. I know I have so much going on and to do right now. I don't have time or the patience to deal with these folks right now.

You're welcome and I hope it all works out. 😊

No problem, I know it's confusing sometimes but I would feel weird putting their names out there for me to complain about lol! I think it will either way. It just irritates me that people make assumptions about what is going to happen!
