ARE LAWN GAMES LAME?

Future Mrs. McCreary!, on May 4, 2016 at 4:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Hey ladies!

So for our wedding we are having a "social hour" at 4pm for everyone to arrive and have a drink, then the ceremony is at 5pm. After that we are having cocktail hour for about an hour while my fiancé and I take our pictures. Its an outdoor venue, and so I was wondering if we should have a couple lawn games for people to entertain themselves with or not? Things like corn hole, ladder toss, etc. Our wedding isn't going to be fancy, but it isn't casual either. Just want to see if I should even bother with them or not or if they would be stupid, lol.

We are having a full-on cornhole tournament, ping pong, and a ladder game. Our friends dig that and have taken it upon themselves to make a bracket. What do your guests like? You know them best.

We had an outdoor venue that offered lawn games and I went back and forth on it for awhile. Our wedding wasn't super formal either. Ultimately, I decided not to do them but the night before the wedding, someone in the bridal party mentioned how fun it would be to have them, and asked my coordinator the next day if they could be set up. Since people wanted it, I decided to let her set them up and it ended up being a hit.

I think that sounds like fun! There's always someone out there who will tell you something is lame, doesn't mean most people won't find it fun!!

Depends on your venue, level of formality, and your crowd. And maybe region/class background.

My East Coast family almost never play lawn games, so upscale versions of them seem charmingly retro and offbeat to us - like mason jar cocktail holders at a Brooklyn bar, very self-consciously hipster. To my Southern fiance, they're common at backyard BBQs but "tacky" at formal occasions (I think his exact reaction was "we're not rednecks, for God's sake")

Giant jenga was a huge hit at our wedding! The vintage croquet sets that I scoured for in antique stores were overlooked, and even though a ton of my guests love cornhole nobody played it because it was not inside the tent. Here's a guest photo of the giant jenga Smiley smile My DH made the set with his friend (the day of the wedding!! he's a procrastinator lol).

Personally I probably wouldn't play unless I knew all the guests very well. I think it depends on where you live too, the guests you're having and the overall feel of the wedding.

I don't think they're lame. We're thinking about having corn hole and life size jenga during our cocktail hour because we have the outdoor space and our friends love it.

Lol. Plenty of people that like yard games are NOT rednecks. I'm not. None of my friends are.

Also, giant jenga really brought people together. My second cousin from FL was hanging out with our good friends from UT; my aunt & uncle really got along with some of our friends from our neighborhood. I saw several people talking and interacting because of that giant jenga set. Loved it!

I've been to a few weddings with lawn games and I always see a lot of people using them. I personally am not good at cornhole when I'm drinking so I don't partake. Just keep them simple and off to the side. One wedding I went to had a full on volleyball net and guests were actually playing volleyball in their nice clothes. I thought that was weird.

We are doing cornhole. My dad already made 2 sets for us. I think it will be a good way for people to mingle since not everyone dances. Go for it!

My indoor venue has pool and that game that is like shuffle board but on a table and such in a separate room we will be leaving open after dinner, I don't think it is odd at all.

I don't think it's lame! Our venue is outdoors and there is a lot of extra space. We are doing cornhole, nuts on a fence (as my dad calls it), and giant jenga. I think it will be fun and so far anyone we have mentioned it to thinks it sounds awesome. You'll probably have some people think it's lame but hey, it isn't their wedding. Smiley smile

No I don't think it's lame at all, it sounds fun! As long as it's done classy then why not? You could do some croquet or horseshoes, it's perfect for an outside wedding.

I think it depends on the venue. We are doing them because we are having a small, casual, barn wedding and it makes sense. As long as if fits your theme and doesn't turn it into a carnival, it should be fun. If you and your hubby partake it will make other people do it, sometimes people won't start doing it until they see others doing it, so keep that in mind too.

Absolutely depends on your crowd. My non-dancers are also vehemently non-lawn-gamers...they'd sneer at games if I had them (I'd sneer at them too).

However, I played bocce ball (is that the right name?) with a friend at a work party and we had a total blast. Granted, we were in jeans and sneakers at the time, not heels and skirts.

Not at all.. I just really think it depends on the setting or theme of your wedding.
