Are babies considered guests?

Alexis, on June 23, 2013 at 12:25 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

Would you consider babies as a guest? like they're obviously an invited guest but for like meals and renting a venue. would you add them to the number of people youre inviting? i know this may seem like a dumb question but most of my family and some of my friends all have babies.

For meals, typically your caterer will have a minimum age at which babies are counted. (The younger ones typically are either nursing, or eating from the adults' plates, so they don't need their own meals.) I'd check with your caterer on that.

You should probably also check with the venue. The venue is more likely to treat babies as guests, since they do take up a place, even if they are in high chairs.

It depends on the age. If they are over a certain age they are considered an adult and will be charged. Maybe not the full amount, but for example. My venue is $144 per person and children 3 and over is $134... I was like omg.. So, I made it a adult only reception besides the children in our bridal party... So, you may want to inquire with your caterer or venue about that.

My venue counts them but different age ranges have different prices. I believe under 3 years old they are free and it's a reduced price up to age 10 or so. They need to be in count though so venue can provide booster seats / height chairs as necessary.

Holy Moley Felicia!! $134 for a child's meal?!?! How can a 3 year old possible cost anywhere near that much. Talk about an insane profit margin!

It depends on how old they are. I had a lot of babies on my invite list who were over 40, so I ended up cutting them to make room for more adults. Smiley smile

Oh how I wish I can make it an adult only wedding. But my family would be highly offended. We are all very family oriented. I just hate the fact that there are more kids than adults!!! But I guess I will have to talk to the ppl at my venue and see what we can work out.

When I interviewed venues, I made it a very no-nonsense, practical, "obvious" thing--"And what is your lower price for children, aged 12 and under?" I didn't get a single children's plate quote over something like $18, and that was for venues that have a food and drink minimum of, say, $15000.00 for a daytime wedding!

Sometimes you just have to show these people who is boss, and that you aren't going to be dealing in any BS. Smiley winking

Depends on the venue. And Rachel, 'showing these people whose boss" is an argumentative, bullyish attitude that will rarely make them want to do their best for you.

Every venue is going to have a policy, not based on ripping you off but on actual costs, minimums, and labor. Setting up 20 highchairs is going to take as much time as setting up 20 chairs, and a kid who plays with an entire plate of food still wastes a plate of food. They still require a portion of a waiter, a plate, a napkin...well, you see.

Adults only; way to go. How anyone can be offended at what is essentially your choice and your bill is beyond me.

Well my family would just have this atitude of "how dare she not invite her younger cousins and blah blah!" I know its weird for family to say that but theyre all pretty honest when they dont like something.

Depends on the venue/catering. Most I found didn't charge for babies. (baby meaning under 2).

I had the same question lol it depends on the venue. For ours, kids under three are free and do not count as guests. Unfortunately, kids 4yrs old and older count as guests and the price is the same as adults (even for open bar!) good thing we only have 2 that fall in that category. I hate having to pay for open bar per guest even for those under 21 but ughh I'll make sure all those over 21 take good advantage of the open bar.

As long as they are not old enough to eat their own plate or take up a table placement/ seat they are not counted. so somewhere between newborn to about 2 1/2 years old. Sometimes 3 years old it depends. Also some vendors allow for a certain amount of children free. My venue allows for 5 children under 12 for free after we have met our 80 person minimum. In addition to that kids from newborn to 2-3 are not counted as guests. However, I am only having the flower girl, and out of town guest kids at the wedding. Its adult only. I will only have about 7-8 kids at my wedding total.

Ask both your venue and catering I know that if you can tell them ages of the kids it works better and most of the time anyone under 1 or 2 is free but having highchairs for them is nice IMO. I have been to a wedding where they didn't count the kids for anything but food and they had people trying to borrow chairs for the ones big enough to sit on them it was a bit much and over crowded.

Alejandra I don't agree with them charging an open bar to those under 21. Luckily the places we looked into the bar fee per person was per adults 21 and up.
