Apps for cocktail hour??

Courtney, on April 5, 2017 at 8:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 98

I know by posting this i will get some very blunt answers and im perfectly fine with that. But are appetizers really necessary at a cocktail hour? The wedding i went to where no budget was even considered had no appetizers and back then i never noticed because an hour of social cocktail hour with drinks it never even crossed my mind. Dinner was served at 6. Do guests really have that much time to eat ,drink and mingle during this hour. Thanks for any input.

Yes, you absolutely need apps for cocktail hour. If your guests are drinking for an hour on an empty stomach many of them will get hammered and it will go downhill from there.

Yes. They'll be starving and drinking. Not a good combo.

Alcohol + no apps = your guests get hangry. And there isn't a Snickers bar big enough in the world to fix that.

Yes, they need them. Alcohol and no food will have them drunk and questioning where are the apps....

UO: I will preface this by saying that I will have food at my cocktail hour BUT as a guest, I rarely eat much of anything at cocktail hour. I get preoccupied with drinking and mingling and plus I know that dinner will be served shortly so don't feel a need to eat a lot. I've been to cocktail hours that didn't have more than cheese, crackers, fruit and nuts and I thought that was completely fine.

Thanks leelee. I wondered if i was the only one who never even thought about food during cocktail hour with beer and wine reception only i was never thinking about wheres the food during the wedding i went to. I would guess people eat breakfast and lunch before attending a ceremony and reception so unless you eat like me once a day an empty stomach shouldnt be a problem but i do understand where you are coming from.

Maybe you can do light appetizers and finger foods like cheese and crackers and fruit? That may help keep the cost down a little.

Most likely your guests will be hungry and no food + alcohol = no bueno sick guests. Just because others might not eat or be too busy mingling, doesn't mean there won't be anyone there starving. Please be considerate

We're just doing a trail mix bar and fruit station, something they can at least snack on while mingling

UO but I think the argument that your guests are going to get drunk too fast if you don't provide food for 45-1 hour of drinking is ridiculous. If people are drunk at your wedding, it's because they made too many trips to the bar, not because you didn't feed them cheese cubes before dinner.

We're having cheese and fruit with the cocktail hour only, with open bar of beer and wine of course. But our ceremony starts at 11am so it's a late morning/early afternoon reception. As long as they have something to munch on, they'll be fine.

Cocktail hour food is usually my favorite food of the wedding and what I look forward to! I always make it a point to try everything. Yes, I am that hungry at that time.

It' s not a matter of getting drunk; no matter what time you have your ceremony, people got dressed, traveled, got there early and had a ceremony. By the end of it, they're starving and after cocktail hour there is usually still 40 minutes of seating/intros//first dances/speeches.

    Ya gotta have food.

I really think it's a good thing idea. Most caterers will include this in their quote. I too have been to cocktail hours with no apps and I didn't notice. It was like 2 1/2 hours too. I guess I was too busy drinking to care about food. That doesn't mean others didn't. Better to just be safe in case you have starving guests.

@Celia I don't disagree with you at all. I was referring to StPaulGirl's argument that you need apps or your guests will be hammered after an hour of drinking on an empty stomach.
