Anyone who opted to not have a dj at their wedding?

Marguerite, on April 24, 2023 at 6:09 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

My fiancée and I are trying to keep costs of our wedding down. We decided to have a brunch wedding and have been playing around with the idea of having a DJ or not. Initially I thought it would be a good idea mainly for the MC services to have someone do our announcements. Neither one of us are big on dancing but we are planning on doing the traditional first dance/father daughter dance. We are also planning on doing picnic games and having different activities for other non dancers to also have a fun time. That being said I did do research and received quotes from a few DJs. It seems finding someone under $2,000 for 5-6 hours late morning is a bit more difficult than anticipated so now I am considering opting out of the DJ all together and reallocating those funds elsewhere. So I want to see if I can get some input from those who did not have a DJ:

Was it worth it?

How did you create you playlist?

Who did you have working the playlist?

Did you have any announcements/how did it go?

What would you have done differently/any advice?

Us!! Our big day is in 29 days and we created our own playlists for the reception. The price of everything is ridiculous and we refused to pay for a Dj when we can make our own. Also it was fun to do together.

We have 2 playlists. One of the cocktail hour/dinner. And another one for the reception. His best man is going to be in charge of the mic. So he’s making all announcements ( grand entrance, first dance, cake cutting, etc.) and my sister is in charge of the playlists because she’s good at details like that. Plus we’re going to go over everything to make it as easy possible. We’re going to let the playlists run. The only time my sister is going to have to select songs on the playlist is our first dance song and last dance of the night song. And those are on the top of the playlist so it’s going to be easy for her to find it. We also made the songs in a particular order because we want to make sure the slow/fast songs is a ratio.

You need the sound system too. One person had found a $300 bluetooth amplified speaker to play music on. That was instead of renting equipment at about the same cost. the playlist then I think was going to be in a cellphone. Just have to make sure no phone calls arrive at that time. But make sure you have the cell phone part figured out first and decide whether you need to make announcements too -- maybe a bluetooth microphone?

Oh thank you so much for that input!! I don’t think I would have considered the phone calls thing so thank you for bringing that up! I’m pretty sure my venue has a sound system that can be connected blue tooth but I will definitely make sure I follow through to make sure all equipment is compatible and I can buy anything else I might need.

Thank you for your input! After going back and forth a lot and determining we would rather have music just be more of a background and enhancer and all the advice on this thread we have decided to go the playlist route. I have a very close friend who works in crowds and event managing for a living who offered to run the playlists and make announcements and me and my fiancé can work together to curate the perfect playlist which I am looking forward to…I’m so grateful for the suggestions about equipment bc this is something I would not have thought have until the last minute and then panicked so I’m really glad that concern was brought to my attention.
