Anyone having one of the tiers fake for cake?

Michelle, on March 1, 2020 at 11:17 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
I had my cake tasting at Giant Eagle and I really liked the flavors! Way better and cheaper than the other places I’ve tasted! I’ve always envisioned a tier cake, I prefer it to be by itself rather than surrounded by cupcakes. So I opted for just the top tier to be real and the two base tiers fake. Real servings is $4.50/person and fake is $2.50/person. I’ll have sheet cakes served so my total with delivery and set up for 160 servings is $375.

People say decorating a fake cake is a waste. So I looked into a two tier cake all real and the rest sheet cake and it would only save me like $20...when I prefer the three tier. So I don’t feel like its a waste... thoughts?
A two tier cake would still be pretty. Though I prefer height.Anyone having one of the tiers fake for cake? 1

Yessss Giant Eagle cake rocks. Though if it's only going to save you $20 I'd just do what you'd prefer. Smiley smile

A waste to me personally. I would rather have the tiers all real but at the end of the day do what you want. I still think the sheet cake to serve is great.

I agree with this. I think if it’s real at least it could all be served. But I do agree that I like the look of a three tier cake

I thinm the two tier is sweet, but if it's only saving you $20 and you really prefer three tiers, do what makes you happy! 😊

Thanks, everyone. I really like the look of three tier, I know some of you think it's silly but I like what I like lol. It's not too much of a difference in pricing from the two tier... if I got a full three tier it'd be $100 more for less servings.

I'd say pay the extra and get the height of the cake you want. My brother did a similar thing when he got married. Only their top tier was real and the other two were fake. He also had sheet cakes in the kitchen that served his guests. No one is going to know your other tiers are fake unless you tell them. Smiley smile

Thanks for the input! It seems popular opinion is to not go fake but I think the height really fills the table area. I don't save much more from a 2 tier cake... and a full 3 tier cake is $100+!

A two tier cake with a large and full cake topper like in the photo looks just like a three tier cake in my opinion. But I am a person who likes to save money any way possible. Most guest won't notice it isn't three tiers. If you did the top like the photo you could stick a Mr&MRS cake topper in to the florals and it would absolutely look like a three tier cake and have the same height.

I don't think it's a waste considering what you probably would save but it depends on the Bakery. Ima cake decorator and I'm doing my cake entirely fake except a piece in the bottom tier for us to cut for photos. I'm having a separate 5" cake tier made for our anniversary tier for us to cut next yr $7 and getting (3) 1/4 sheets for guest which will equal up to $80 that's 3 different flavors cakes and fillings. Plus we are doing a dessert bar. The fake cake will cost me $12 to do after buying the Styrofoam. My bakery is only charging me the cake piece in the bottom and icing it. So $100 for a cake that I want and I don't have to worry about transporting it because it's fake. My venue is a hour away from my bakery. The picture is my cake inspiration but I'm going to do a square version. Anyone having one of the tiers fake for cake? 2

I went to a wedding once that had a fake cake with one slice that was real for cake cutting ceremony. Everyone thought it was weird. There were half sheet cakes of 3 flavors from a local grocery brought out so people could pick what they wanted and go back for seconds with almost none leftover, and that part of it was a huge hit.

It doesn't make sense to charge per person for something that isn't being eaten.
