Anyone go/going to Greece for their honeymoon?

Danielle, on February 5, 2016 at 10:54 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 26

Hi all! We are in the midst of planning our honeymoon and are going to Greece! AKA the tippy top of my bucket list of places to see in this world. Needless to say, I am beyond excited.

We are flying into Athens and doing at least one day there to see the major sights, and then going to Santorini for 3 or 4 nights. We need to decide which other Greek island to see for another 3 nights - we are thinking about Naxos and Crete.

Does anyone have any experience with these locations or suggestions on which other island besides Santorini would be the best? We want to make sure we don't spend too much time on a ferry getting from to the other, and we'd love the second place to be beachy since Santorini isn't as beach-oriented.

Would LOVE any input!

I'm going on a cruise, never been to Greece or Europe rather and we are going to Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and Crete. Mykonos looks beautiful and has a goodnight life I hear. Athens I hear isn't that nice so one day there sounds about right to see all the major sights. I'm no help really just wanted to comment. I'm planning on doing the hike from Fira to Oia about a 3 hours with all the stops to take pictures, tripadvisor is the best! Can't wait!!!

Halee - we have just been looking at places on Booking.com and estimating ferry prices. Booking our flights through American Airlines because we have points. Is there anywhere else worth checking?

Colleen & Sarah thanks for commenting! The beaches near Naxos look SO pretty but the ones near Crete do too! I am torn and trying to figure out which trips will be easiest.

We left the day after our wedding. Between flight times and time zones, it took 21 hours, to get to our hotel, on one of the islands mentioned above. In hindsight, we should have waited a few days/recovered, from our wedding. We'll probably never take a trip like that again, though.

I went to Greece in 2013 for 16 days. We went to Crete, Santorini, Paros, Mykonos, and Athens. I'm happy you're going to Santorini because it is my favorite island. Besides Santorini, I would definitely go to Paros because it has the most beautiful desolate beaches. You will have an entire beach to yourself!! If you're into that I would go to Paros. Mykonos is great because the party scene is amazing!! They start partying at 2am and end like at 10am, it's crazy, but so fun!

FYI, Santorini has amazing beaches too! Make sure to head to Red beach, hard to get to, but so worth it!! Crete has cool beaches, they also have Chrissi Island, which is beautiful and hot, but walking into the water is painful the rocks cut my feet! Although this island was great it is not nearly as nice as Paros!

I've been to a few Greek Islands, Santorini and Crete for conferences with some added vacation days and Kos for a week at an all inclusive place. I really loved Santorini and to be honest, it was best in the evening when most cruise passenger had left and it was quieter. I second the red beach, but make sure to wear some footwear Smiley smile

For our HM, we are first going to Switzerland (to my hometown of Zurich) and then flying to Mykonos from there for 7 nights, just bought the tickets last night! We're still deciding where we should stay on the island, I'm not sure I want to be right at party central, it would be nice being somewhere quieter and then having the option of taking a bus/cab to places.

I went to Santorini, Mykonos, and Athens last summer, and now I'm hungry. So much good food!

    1. While you're in Santorini, I highly recommend taking an excursion to the volcano, swimming in the spring, and stopping off Therasia. At the top of Therasia is a little town with the best restaurant in Greece. It's called "Different Restaurant Taverna". Their lamb kabobs are so good, I still dream about them.

    2. If you go to Mykonos, definitely get an ATV one day and go out to the beaches.

    3. We were only in Athens for 36 hours, and honestly, it was plenty. The islands are way more fun.

Took a trip to Greece a few years ago. Santorini is one of my absolutely favorite places in the world-- especially the red beach! Both Mykonos and Crete take a close second though (: have fun!

We are flying into Rome, spending a couple days and then taking a cruise of the Greek Islands. I'll be following this thread for suggestions, too.

I second frugal_gator's advice. I went to Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos in 2011 and had a blast. You definitely don't need a lot of time in Athens. And don't miss the sunset in Oia - it's amazing!!!

You will love Greece! I have tons of family there and have been a bunch of times Smiley smile

Just a tip... Crete is quite far from Santorini. I would pick another island in the same general area of Santorini. That way you can take the boat and kind of keep going on your way. Don't remember the exact route, but you can check which islands the boat route stops at. I would pick one thats on the same route as Santorini to make things easy for you Smiley smile

Also some planning tips.. You can easily take the metro (subway) from Athens to Piraeus, where you will catch your ferry to Santorini. Depending on times available you may have to spend a night in Piraeus. If you haven't already booked a hotel in Athens, may I make a suggestion? Alice Inn is amazing! Its an old house that is steps away from Plaka (where you want to be in Athens!) So much charm. It was fantastic. Stay away from Omonia, which unfortunately, is where a TON of hotels are. But it is really not a nice area. You may want more than one night in Athens as the sights kind of close early if you want to visit a lot of them. Feel free to inbox me if you have anymore questions! I LOVE Greece!

We went to Athens and Santorini. Santorini was so perfect for a honeymoon - so romantic and relaxing! We stayed in Fira and the sunset is just as beautiful there, we walked to Oia one day just to be sure Smiley smile I second the volcano boat tour. We also took a winery tour which took us around the entire island and we had a blast. The wine was so so but the views were amazing!

I've heard that Crete is the best of the others and has great beaches. Mykonos is the party island so it depends if that is what you want to do on your honeymoon.

We actually stayed in Athens for two nights and loved it! We stayed right by the ruins so the historic district I think. So many great restaurants.

Being from Florida, I have to say I was actually really disappointed with the sunsets. I'm used to the first picture, so when everyone built them up, the 2nd picture was a bummer.

Santorini is still amazing! We also went to a winery (Santo Wines) built into the cliff, and it was a breathtaking view.
