Anyone Folding 1000 Cranes?

JPB808, on May 2, 2016 at 5:36 PM Posted in Planning 1 24

So I was curious on this one. Just so everyone knows, I do have Japanese in my blood lol. Anyway, one of my BM has folded 1000 cranes before she got married....She took those cranes and had them framed into a picture (beautiful I may add).

I'm just curious to know if anyone else is doing this?

Just a little note just in case people aren't aware of this tradition....It is said that Cranes are 1 of 3 holy creatures that can live for 1000 years. When you fold 1000 cranes, each crane that you fold represents 1 year of the cranes life. So by completing this task before your wedding day would be richly rewarded with a good and happy, prosperous marriage paying homage to the majestic crane, which mates for life and is said (again) to live 1000 years.

***People not only do this for marriages, but for the sickly, Anniversaries, etc.***

Oh, during my student teaching we read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. What a beautiful story!! In the story, she is making them while she is sick in the hospital.

I am not doing this for my wedding, but I think the meaning is really sweet.

I actually folded 1,000 cranes when I was in middle school to give it to a boyfriend that I was dating at that time.. It took awhile to fold and we broke up when I was almost done. I ended up giving it to my parents and they still have it lol

I think it's a very sweet tradition. I folded about 100 or so cranes to use as escort cards, I'm not japanese, but I always liked them. I could definitely have done more, but I love mundane tasks. Even my husband got really into it and loved making them

What a beautiful tradition. Can you have a crane folding afternoon with your girls/family? Get some drinks, order in some food and turn up some music? The personal ones you made you can keep, otherwise, I'd also 'hire' out for the large numbers.

    That's a beautiful tradition. But I wouldn't fold 1,000 cranes in a 1,000 years. Enjoy!

I just went to a wedding where they had folded 1000 cranes. They had them hung up in several groups like chandeliers (pic attached).

I also went to a wedding once where they included a piece of paper and instructions to fold a crane and requested that the guests fold it and sign it and send it back with the RSVP. At the wedding, they had them strung up attached to a backdrop frame. It looked really pretty, and it was fun to try to find yours! It was also a way for people to participate somewhat even if they couldn't attend.

Thanks everyone...the 1000 crane folding is very common in Hawaii. I'm in a huge debate whether to do them or not due to I'm really close to a double digit count down lol.

@ LDwed about how long did it take you to fold 100 cranes (Just out of curiosity)? Only because if I were to start say tomorrow...I would have to be folding at least 10 a day (to finish a few days before our wedding)....but knowing myself, I know I would want them to be framed and placed on display at our wedding....or I could even do what @Holly kinda mentioned, but instead I would have them open one up and write a special note, refold and then get them all framed after the wedding.

Traditionally, the father of the bride folds the cranes as a wish for the new couple...

I am doing this! Well, I folded a few hundred with my family and friends helping to fold the rest because 1,000 is A LOT! My mom then got them organized and framed into my family crest to display at the wedding with an explanation also on display so my fiance's family can learn about the tradition. I absolutely love it!! My fiancé also folded a "token" crane that is beautifully displayed next to the crest. =]

@MauiWowie Yes I agree with you that traditionally in Japan the father folds them. But nowadays anyone can fold them...Wedding party, parents of Bride/Groom, Bride, or Bride and Groom.

    This is what is online:

"Traditionally in Japan, the bride’s father made the cranes and presented them to the bride on her wedding day. Today, the cranes can be made by the bride’s parents as a gift and well wish for the newlyweds. The bride alone or the couple together can also take on the task, learning patience, commitment and communication in the face of a long challenging task. Or, folding the cranes can be divided among many friends and family, and turned into social events and fun times spent together ahead of the wedding. It’s entirely up to you, and depends on what the tradition behind the cranes means to you."

My whole wedding is based on 1000 cranes! I've been folding them for several months. Our wedding favors are 10 1" tiny cranes in a clear glass ornament.

Our cake and cupcakes have cranes and our centerpiece safe branches with origami flowers and cranes.

A lot of work but everything is coming together nicely.

Actually the tradition is ONLY the bride can fold the cranes. This in tradition shows patience for her new husband. The crane us a symbol of purity.

A tradition is one thing, what a tradition turns into is another... The father is the traditional folder. Period.

I'm not saying it's not OK for the bride or anyone else to fold the cranes. Just acknowledging what the real tradition is.
