anyone else felt really overdone after makeup trial???

Kim, on April 16, 2010 at 11:26 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

Is anyone else having trouble finding a makeup style they like? i don't wear much makeup so perhaps that is most of the issue -- i was really uncomfortable with the amount of makeup and the last thing i want is to be uncomfortable on the day-of! i feel like i am being so picky (and feel awful for the artist, who is actually good at what she does) but i HATE makeup that looks like makeup -- ick.

i know it has to go on heavy enough to show up in pics but our ceremony is taking place on a beach and will be in natural light -- i don't want to look heavily made up. i have another trial coming up with a different artist and hope it will go better, but any suggestions?

I know a lot of people insist that you have to wear make-up to look "right" in photos, but I don't wear make-up at all except for the occasional eye liner, and on the few occasions that I've been photographed wearing lipstick, I felt like it looked kind of weird. So I'm just not going to wear make-up for my wedding, because I really do feel like I would look Not Myself in photos if I did. I'm not saying that's the best choice for everyone, but just so you know, there are some of us who are just not planning to wear any. :-)

I wear powder, eyeshadow, blush. Thats it. A lot of times people think I don't wear make-up. And I throw on eye liner maybe once a month. So I know what you mean.

You just have to find someone you like and does a good job for you. Maybe ask for no foundation, because that is what makes it feel so heavy. Mineral make-up seems to feel lighter. Just tell them what you want, and if they are good they'll listen and come through.

I don't think you need to wear tons of makeup. I did not have makeup slathered on, but I had lots of COLOR in the right places. I went slightly brighter than usual, because the camera washes you out so much. But I did not have it caked on. Tell the artist what you want to achieve, and be specific. Bring pictures, and make her keep trying new things until you get it right. Don't leave unsatisfied, you are paying them for the trial! PS. I did my own makeup. Smiley smile

The no foundation request seems like a good thing to try. It's definitely something that I NEVER wear, ever, so it would probably make the biggest difference in my appearance.

@ Cabell- Instead of foundation, you could try a tinted moisturizer. It just evens your skin out, and is super sheer and comfortable. It just feels like lotion. But, wearing no foundation gives the rest of your makeup nothing to stick to (if you were wearing anything else), so it will come right off. Mineral makeup is great, but it shows up very shiny in photos.

Yeah, I think personally I'm just going to stick with no make-up--maybe some fairly neutral lip color, but nothing else. I have really dark eyebrows and lashes naturally, and the ceremony is outside.

Thanks girls! We did powder foundation instead of traditional and I was still uncomfortable with it so am thinking I'll just carry around blotting papers with me and maybe powder the shiny spots! Smiley tongue

The recommendation to have well placed colour is a good one... I will also take the advice to not leave unsatisfied with me to my trial this weekend Analy -- thank you!!! Smiley smile

I guess I'm trying to find the balance between being dressed up and enhanced for the day, and yet still 'feeling like me' lol.

I think it is most important to feel comfortable so that you can enjoy yourself. If you feel weird wearing make-up, then don't wear it. Also, the day you do your trial for the make-up, put your up similar to how you will have it at your wedding and maybe put on a white top so you can get a better idea of how it will look all together. You may look over done if you are wearing a t-shirt and jeans to your trial, but it might look right when you are wearing your wedding dress. I would try to see how it all looks together. Good luck, I hope you find something you like.

You should have blotting papers anyhow. You will probably need to touch up before your formal pictures, after the ceremony. Smiley smile I don't like powder foundation. I think it looks "thicker" if that makes any sense? I used a light photo-finish foundation and set it with powder, to look natural. I used sheer but bright blush, and wet powder eyeliner with lash extension mascara. I think telling them to ease up will make a difference. Take photos too, sometimes it looks totally different in a picture.

Have you tried the airbrush makeup? I have a bride in September who is getting it done and I've heard great things.

Bottom line, you want to look like you. If you do not wear make-up, don't. You may want to put on a but of mascara and perhaps a but of blush.

Make up is far more important in photos...and that being said, it is they eyelashes, cheeks and lips that will show up. Do not do bright lipstick, but rather a muted tone with, perhaps, a but of gloss over it.

I agree with amphotography...You should go with airbrush make up...it is very light....I am a make up artist and I hate wearing anything on my face that does not feel natural...I tried aribrush and use it everyday now. Make sure you tell your MUA that you don't usually wear make up...I have had brides that don't wear make up and some that like heavy make up...I would apply each of these clients make up completely differently. I would request very natural eye colors with light coverage. Since you have red hair a pink or ivory base color with a a medium brown or plum crease color would look nice...I wouldn't do a crease color...my mom her eyes very natural and never likes the outcome when their is a contour color. Also most MUAs use professional foundation palettes which can be heavy so I would ask what kind of foundation your MUA uses before requesting a trial with her. And don't be afraid to ask you MUA to redue your make up until you like it...that is what the trial is for.

I had someone show me make-up at the mall. I always react to make-up, so I never wear it. I felt the same way, but I did not know if it was because I never wear make-up anyways, or if she really gave me too much. Smiley tongue

Hi Kim. There is no need to wear an a ton of makeup for the day of your wedding. Concealing certain area or a very light airbrushing with some bronzor or blush and mascara will highlight the areas that come forward in pictures. I have done several brides that absolutely hate makeup and I was able to achieve their personal taste. Definately let the girl know what you don't like. It is the only way we can get it right. We really do want you to be happy with your look.

    Warm Regards and best wishes!

I have been doing makeup for fourteen years and formulate my own products. I would suggest having a tinted moisturizer custom blended. Custom blending colors allows for a 'no makeup' look. A tinted moisturizer is half a light foundation and half moisturizer. This will look very, very sheer and let your own skin shine through.

For the eyes, all you need is very soft natural, neutral colors to bring out the eye.... that are super blended for subtle hint of accent. Followed by a brown mascara, to keep the look as natural as possible.

Just find someone who is actually a pro in the entertainment business and has made her living doing stars. In my professional experience as a performer, these people (usually charging around $200 for a session not including traveling to you) actually make you look more natural and more beautiful than you ever thought you could be. The price would be the same no matter where you live because the price is the NY/Hollywood going rate. It might be hard to find someone like that in a remote town, though. I'm a performer and if I pay any less, I get someone who makes me look trashy. If I find a pro in the entertainment industry, however, I remember why I am paying so much. Foundation you cannot detect, amazing eyes that don't really seem "made-up," natural lips that just look better shaped, reshaping the bones of the cheeks without detecting the blush, etc.

    Good luck!
