Any ideas on bustle??

Randi, on April 30, 2017 at 11:04 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

Ok so I can't believe I'm JUST thinking of asking for input here!

Anyway- ordered my dress in January. It didn't arrive until first part of April (3 weeks later than estimated at time of purchase).

When I tried it on, I was told that it's a more difficult dress to bustle, but that they've done it.

Bustling didn't come up in first fitting & then I finally thought to ask at the end of the 2nd fitting, and the lady looked at me like I was crazy!

"Ohhhhhh... I don't know about that.... I'll have to really think on that one.."

Ummm.... what??!

Everything is going to be outside & certainly I could have chosen a different dress, but I was under the impression that a bustle could be done & everything would be fine. (And I think I tried on 50 dresses.... this was the only one that made me feel good. It's comfortable. It's not crazy-heavy. It's very pretty... I just really liked it)

Anyone else have this dress? Any bustling ideas? Pics??

It's an Eddy K.

Pick up is May 10!

(AND I've seen other brides post pictures of bustles that they just weren't happy with... didn't "flow" well....changed the whole shape of everything "back there" & I had never realized that could even be a problem!

I just know I don't have a lot of time so if she couldn't figure out a bustle at all, I want to have some ideas to show her.... or if she does it in some weird way, I want to have alternatives to request)

After a quick search I found this. Not sure the name of this style but it might work.

I don't see why they couldn't bustle it. The problem is that there are multiple types of bustles and trying to figure out which would look best might be difficult. http://thegildedthimble.com/bustles/ has a really good visual guide that breaks down several different bustle options that you can go over with the person doing alterations. It's not a popular one, but maybe a wrist one would work without comprising the train?

That looks like a "one point bustle" (I'm sure that's not the technical term for that.... but that's all I can think to call it)

She just didn't think that would work at all.

Wish I knew more about sewing!!

(Or that I could just look at all that fabric & say "No big deal... we just do ______ and it'll be perfect!")

Ahhhhh.... thanks for helping me brainstorm. Smiley smile

    @Becky-

We even asked about the wrist one / dancing hoop & she said THAT wouldn't work either!

    Oy

She just poo-poo'd everything we thought might be a fix.

I imagined something like Jamie posted. Just a single pick up to get it off the ground. The loop could be hidden in the larger cluster of lace right in the middle.

I have a lace dress too and the bustle is going to be done like the one Jamie posted. The seamstress gave me a few options, but I decided since I'll be outside it would be best to have it up off the ground more.

My lace is different than yours, heavier is a good description if that makes sense. My butt looks like Cinderellas step sisters when they are going to the ball, but it means my dress won't be covered in dirt. I think that kind would work well (and with your lace you won't look like an evil step sister lol) or the wrist one could work to keep it up.

    @Becky

That was a helpful resource. At least I know some more options & what they're called now!

I think a triple American bustle would look nice, but she didn't even think that would work.

I'm hoping it's bustled when I go back the last time.... and that it's not some weird, awkward looking style.

I feel like your seamstress should have told you directly at the first fitting that she was not sure she could bustle it. Can you reach other to other local seamstresses with pictures and information about your dress and request bustle options from them? It sounds like this seamstress just has never worked with your dress style before and is very reluctant to do anything but maybe you could find someone else local who just do the bustle after you get it back from this current person. It's very unfair she just ignored needing a bustle instead of mentioning it - not really giving you much time at all to figure something out if she will not do one.

@Sylphier, that's a good idea too. Smiley smile

I mean this shop sells thousands of gowns.... mostly wedding gowns. It's what they do all day, every day... so I'm super surprised that she's acting so pessimistic about this.

I even found a few of the same dresses for sale on those resale websites, so I sent out a couple of "hello, you don't know me.... but were you able to bustle that dress?? And if so, would you email me a picture!!?" to random strangers.

Maybe that will turn up some good news....

I'm TRYING to get ahead of this & not have to run around all night, trying not to trip on myself!

I was told that with that kind of fabric you could only do an over bustle. But that's what they told me while I was trying on dresses.. I ended up picking a different dress.

My friend bought a dress very similar to that at David's Bridal and they said they could bustle it no problem and pinned it to show her how. I'm really regretting not taking pictures right now. Sorry I can't be much more than moral support.

I don't see how you can't bustle that. This picture is a 5 point American bustle. Theres also a French that goes underneath the dress which I could see on your dress. I would go to another seamstress and get a second opinion as I think she was really just trying to say "I don't feel comfortable bustling that and I'll probably mess that up if I try. "

Ok well all of the feedback makes me feel better that it CAN be done....I'm hoping that I don't actually have to go find a new seamstress just a few days out, but it's certainly an option!

Thank y'all so much for your feedback!! Smiley smile
