Any brides that have had a winter DECEMBER wedding need your advice

Kelly, on November 11, 2016 at 11:10 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

I was planning to have a winter December 29,2018 wedding I am concerned that the guests would think it is too close to the holidays and not interested in attending . I dont want to sound greedy but I'm afraid that people won't want to dish out money for the travel expenses . What is your advice on a winter wedding ? Should I consider moving it to January ?

Mine is 12/17/17, and most guests are local. We are in California, so weather shouldn't be a problem. Travel can be hard if you have a lot of people from out of town though!

My fiancé and I went to a wedding the weekend before Christmas last year. It was out of town but we lucked out and used a timeshare. If it was the week after i don't know if we would have gone since my future in laws are out of state and we try to see them as well. I'd say consider who your friends and family are and also how they normally spend their holidays

I know a lot of people that have weddings between Christmas and New Years but I personally don't think it's the best time. If you have a lot of out of town guests I would consider moving your date.

I'm so undecided we have only been engaged for a week but have been together 8 years and have two children .. I thought a date would come to me so much easier lol do you ladies think I should consider the beginning of December instead of the end of December to the first week of the new year

If most of your guests have to travel, I probably wouldn't pick a date so close to Christmastime. Many people already have to travel to see family around that time, and with flights, hotels, etc. being so expensive, it's likely they wouldn't be able to afford another big expense. I do think the beginning of December would be better, or push it to the middle/end of January unless snow is a big concern. Is there a specific reason you are set on Dec/January? I only ask because I was pretty set on wanting a winter wedding at first, but as I got close to booking a venue I started to get super nervous about a massive blizzard occurring on my wedding. My FH didn't like the idea of an early December wedding, so we picked March since in our area it can often still feel a bit winter-y even though it's technically early spring.

Hi Kelly, welcome to WW! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default icons) so that we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other posters.

If you stick with Dec 29th, you should definitely expect more declines. It is the holidays when people have a lot of pre-existing travel plans and traditions. I think early December would be much better!

This is a hard question to answer. We have weddings booked every night from the 26th through January 3d. That being said, most of them are more intimate ones; the biggest is 30 people.

Our wedding is the weekend before thanksgiving so I was a little hesitant on the date because I didn't want it too close to any holiday. When 11/18/17 was the only date that worked for us we agreed and booked it. All of our close friends and family will be there and that's all we're really wanting. We also are completely understanding if people can't attend due to it being so close.

I've attended two weddings like this and I always have found it to be a tad inconvenient and inconsiderate. That time of year is so busy and adding travel and a wedding on top of that crazy time just becomes excessive. It's also expensive! That time of year is always heavy on the expenses. As a guest, I'd do a ughhhhhhh upon receiving the invite. Maybe earlier in the season or sometime after the new year? I think you'd see a lot more in attendance then.

Have you looked into whether pricing of venues is less expensive in January? Just a thought.
