And the jeweler said "Your ring won't be back til AFTER YOUR WEDDING"!

Mrs. Boat, on January 17, 2011 at 10:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

And, I almost died!

FH and I went in to our jewelry store today to "just ask" when should we bring in my rings to be soddered, and to replace the diamond that fell off of one of my wedding bands. Well, the very nice girl told us: Oh, you should have brought the diamond replacement to be done LAST WEEK. It's going to take 6-8 weeks for that to be back to our store, THEN you have to send them off to be redipped and soddered at another one of their corporate jewelers, and that takes 3-4 weeks.

OH HECK NO! She did work with us on how to be able to get around that... we're sending off the band to be repaired, resized and redipped. We're also sending off the engagement ring and the other band to be resized, redipped and soddered. Then after the wedding is done, we'll go back and sodder the last band in place.

So from today until the wedding (55 days) I'll be ringless Smiley sad Had to dig through my jewelry box to find my promise ring again.

My advice: get your rings ready with time to spare!

That's Gordon's for ya! LOL. The little girl helping us (and I say little girl cuz she was probably 18, if that) was VERY nice about it, trying to look for ways around it, making Gordon's pay for the "rush" fee and all.

I'm just happy we'll HAVE my rings to wear on our wedding day, even if they're not all stuck together lol

That's unreal! I had to turn my E Ring in to have my custom bands made and that will take 3 weeks... I def had the naked feeling until I got a costume ring to wear in the mean time. Glad it all worked out for you. That just seems like such a long time!

Wow, that is quite a long time. At least you will have it for the wedding.

I take my e ring and all my other jewelery in for inspection and cleaning every six months, so I can catch any issues right away. I was once without the e ring for about a month. I felt totally nude.

Call and talk to the manager if you haven't already.. They told me it'd take 14 days to do my engagement ring and I had it back in 3! Just call and CRY and tell them you need it! It may work!

This is exactly why i've been in contact with my jeweler this past week! I was so scared I wouldn't get my rings back in time (have to have the band custom made and have to send in my e-ring so they can re-shape it so the 2 sit flush). And here FH told me I was crazy for doing it this early!

There's no way to put a rush on it?

If you have a small, old-fashioned jeweler who does the work on premises w/o sending off somewhere -- buy your rings there and get them repaired there. Those big jewelry chains are retail stores -- not jewelers.

They have to send the rings off to Dallas, and then to some other one somewhere else. The jewelry store is in the middle of nowhere Texas, so they have to send out all their work because the local jeweler they used to use screws everything up.

Let's hope we get them back sooner!

The girl helping us already put a rush on it... so we'll see!

I was going to wait a week before the wedding but my ring came from Jared's. All repairs, dipping etc is done there on the spot. I had to have one of my baguettes replaced(wrong shaped diamond) put in, and that only took 2 days but really would've been 1 day.

That is the problem with franchise jewelry stores. I am currently without my ering because it is custom and my jeweler needs to make a wax mold of it and then create my band. He needs my ring for 2 weeks and said the band could be done in 3 weeks, but I told him not to rush.

I'd assume that was a franchise or retail place, not a smaller jeweler? We got ours from a small local store. If I ever have problems it's fixed in less than a week because he does all of the work "in house." You can always find one of those type of jewelers near you and go to them and see what they will charge to fix it. Usually it isn't that costly (and your ring will be back on your hand lickety split).

I am nervous about my ring since we are getting the wedding band custom made. We are going in later this week to start the process so everything is in well before necessary. Sorry to hear about being ringless for so long. I will pray for a speedy job done well!!

I gave up on my local jeweler. My e ring is from Helzberg. The FH has been buying better jewelry from them for me for years. He chose not to go to the local person for the e ring because the sales consultant he has used for years was searching for the heartshaped diamond.

Recently, we went into the local person to get a watch battery. The jeweler saw my e ring and asked to see it, where I bought it, and was it insured. After we replied yes, he asked us if we wanted to make some money. He said he could make this heart shaped diamond "fall" out.

After that statement, we will no longer have anything that is non Helzeberg(meaning jewelery pre FH) repaired there. He obviously is not trustworthy. We will take it to Helzberg to the FH's sales clerk. I think I trust Warren Buffet more. Smiley smile

Sorry you had a bad experience @Carole B. Just remember this isn't the case for everyone. We were recommended to our jeweler by a family who has been buying from him for 40 years. References are so important!

Our local jeweler custom made my e ring. It is heart shaped; I believe it is a G VVS1 .75 carat set in white gold with 8 princess cut .20 carats lining the top of the band. I believe FH paid 3k for it.

Our jeweler is mostly retired and just does it now to pay for fun things for him and his wife (like vacations and golf). But he is certified, registered with the local jewelers guild, is a senior member, and really knows his stuff. He helped us get a wonderful understanding of diamonds and of the system.

We shopped around and no one could compare when it came to what we wanted for quality and cost. He had the diamonds there, took them out, showed them to us, asked if/what we wanted to see. It was a great experience.

@Nancy- Amen. I am unendingly happy FS bought my e-ring from a local jeweler. One of the diamonds on the side fell out of mine, and instead of just sticking a new diamond in there they wanted to completely remake my ring to ensure it wouldn't hapen again. It took less than a week!

Local jewelers over here are CRAP! Although we bought my rings from a divorcee, she gave usall the paperwork for the warranty, which is awesome. Gordon's never asked or questioned the paperwork, which is good, otherwise we would have had to pay for the repairs out of pocket. Phew!

@Jessie Lyn....I def think the quality of a local jeweler varies with where you are located. Also, many local jewelers have been pushed out of business by the bigger chains. I think we have the best of both worlds at Helzberg. The FH has his "girl" whom he has trusted for years and has never sold us anything but quality. Fortunately for me, she contacts him whenever something comes in that she knows I will like. Also, when I buy insurance, I don't have to worry about them going out of business. Warret Buffet is doing pretty well these days. Smiley smile

@STBMrs.Allen....It is awesome that you were able to get all of the paperwork.
