Am I the only one? (Who thinks wedding gowns are gaudy and mostly ugly?) Bite my tongue!

RhnCasi419, on October 14, 2014 at 7:55 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 28

So far, everything about wedding dress shopping has been a big disappointment for me. And why am I finding the majority of the dresses are plain ugly? Perhaps I am going to the wrong stores? (Mostly Italian family-owned and privately owned bridal shops). I've been reading reviews. It isn't helping matters that I am older Smiley sad Saturday my mom told the dresses with belts and sashes are for "younger brides" Ugh. I know exactly what I want that isn't the problem. But mostly what I am seeing are gaudy ostentatious styles that are rather over the top - dare I say it ... ugly. There aren't many simple styles out there, I guess it isn't the trend? I always dreamed about wedding gown shopping. I used to think they were beautiful. Until I actually tried them on Smiley sad

I dunno what you're talking about lol. The shop that I went to had a variety including very bling-y types and more simple. Have you looked online and then found shops that sold the ones you like?

Try David's Bridal? Most of their dresses are simple.

Are you trying on a variety of styles? I have no idea why belts and sashes would be for a specific age group. You can try latterdaybride for simpler gowns; it is a Morman company which means that the dresses are very conservative, but still very beautiful. Most of them are simple.

I just don't like how big and white they are but I went to a davids bridal and said no bling no flash and fell in love with a super simple dress. Try harder.

Haha there was one store where I felt the complete opposite, all of the dresses seemed really plain, and only the ones way out of my budget had more embellishments. If you know what you want maybe find a designer with dresses like that and then find a store that sells that designer. The ones that I thought were too plain for me were made by Pronovias. Maybe check into them.

Also I agree with Emma, David's Bridal does actually seem to have a bit more of a simple look.

I also think a lot of dresses are gaudy. I like a little sparkle, but I don't want to wear an armor of rhinestones to my wedding. I got my dress at BHLDN.com which is owned by Anthropologie. They have gown that are often simpler, with a more bohemian feel to them. There prices are also very good. I got my gown for $800. Not sure if this is what you are thinking of, but doesn't hurt to check them out. I can't upload pictures right now, but here are some dresses I think are more simple and elegant:

@Jennifer thank you for the links. Yeah, me too ... I like a little sparkle and shimmer, definitely do not want the "armor of rhinestones" -

I'm just going to keep looking. I believe I have a couple of months left if I want to have one ordered.

I agree with you a lot of the super embellished dresses are gaudy. I wanted a more simple gown. I found that each store I looked at had a different style of dresses and some had more variety than others. I found a shop that I must have really similar taste as the owner/buyer because I loved nearly everything on the rack. Maybe try to do some research and find a bridal shop near you that has dresses that are more your style. Look online and she if there is a particular designer you like and then find a shop that carries that designer.

J crew...seriously. The store is so simple and classic and so are their wedding dresses. They are beautifully mature and elegant without all the shine and sparkle...which can be achieved (should you want it) with jewelry

Stop going to the Italian shops. I grew up in a very Portuguese community and it's the same thing. Go to American type shops for sure!

David's Bridal has ton of "simple" gowns. Generally the big designer names are going to be over the top and gawdy because they are trying to be original. The more expensive the dress, the more bling and such will be on it.

There are so many out there! The big flashy ones are just what is trendy now so you just have to look harder! Tell your consultant- no armor of rhinestones and go from there.

I found them all a bit over the top, so heavy and too many layers. Very little selection of sheath styles. So, I designed my own! Its almost made. It has been a journey, up to fitting #7 and counting. Will be worth it in the end though!

Find lots of pictures of what you want. A good consultant will see the pattern in the styles you select and pull dresses that fit what you are looking for.

I felt the same way too, for example, I'm not a fan of organza ball gown styles on me, but on other brides, it looks stunning! But ended up finding a simple A-Line burnout lace gown that I completely fell in love with.

Keep looking, you'll find your gown.

I tried on about 100 dresses, so I know how you feel. Just be patient and you will find her. Try a shop that carries numerous designers. That will give you a great variety of dresses to choose from.

My dress is one of the simplest dresses that I have ever seen. Of course WW won't let me post photos, but I assure you it is gorgeous.

It has a sweetheart neckline, and comes down to a V in the back, it's strapless and is all lace. Plain, boring, and it was just what I wanted. I did however, dress is up with a belt for the reception... but for the ceremony I paired it with a floating pearl necklace and bracelet, and a pair of pearl earrings. It really was timeless.

They are out there. Maybe try a more modest boutique?

That's why I'm having mine custom made. I saw some beautiful dresses but wouldn't say I can fall in love with a dress someone else may wear too. If it's simple you want, it shouldn't be hard to have one made for you.
