Alternatives to Shakeology?

Mandypants, on May 1, 2017 at 1:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 43

What are some good meal replacement shakes you've used? I like Shakeology but it's so expensive.

Also, I like chocolate.

Garden of Life-Raw fit. They sell it at health food stores or you can get it on Amazon Smiley smile I get the chocolate and mix it with almond milk.

@taylor they've been a healthier breakfast for me. I don't have much time in the mornings, and I'm guilty of too many McDonald's runs. They keep me fuller too than a bowl of cereal when I have the time.

@Mandypants all of the MLM based meal replacement shakes will end up running about the same cost. Avoid Herbalife at all costs and they are popping up all over the place in Cleveland as nutrition clubs. Vega with greens in chocolate isn't bad and you can pick it up at Target or the grocery store.

I know you didn't ask, and I'm not trying to be rude, but have you looked at any make-ahead breakfast recipes? I just haven't seen any meal replacement shakes that really look great. All the ones I have looked at have added sugar or artificial sweeteners, plus the "nutrients" are usually synthetic. There are so many recipes available for meals that are easily made in advance and full of real nutrients to keep you full.

Sorry, that's a soapbox I know. I'll stop now Smiley smile

I was just looking into this! I also heard Vega is pretty good.

@taylor I know you're not. I've tried and just the make ahead isn't working with my life right now. These aren't something I have daily or anything.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Herbalife. That stuff is evil.

I have thought about making my own smoothies ahead of time and adding protein powder. Which might be the best decision tbh because it takes just as much effort and is probably cheaper.

I just wanted to know if there were any "good" ones out there.

Vega One French Vanilla is great. It's about half the cost of Shakeology, tastes great, has many other nutrients and doesn't upset my stomach. I mix the Vega One with unsweetened almond milk and black coffee in the morning.

I have tried so many before this that left me with an upset stomach, bloated, and tasted horrible.

FH has a really sensitive stomach in the mornings, so he usually grabs a protein shake to hold him over until 11 or so, when he has his real breakfast (overnight oats--yumm!). He really likes the Rocket Refuel ones lately--we pick them up in the dairy aisle of our regular grocery stores. Cost is less than the Vega ones I've used before, and the 'less sugar' ones taste better and have less sugar/sodium.

@taylor I generally agree with you on the whole food approach to eating but I sometimes have to do a shake when I am covering oncall because I just don't have room in my bag to pack extra food.

Just make a big batch of your favorite smoothie, portion it out in a muffin tin, freeze and transfer to a freezer bag. Then take premade "muffins" and toss in the blender. Smiley smile

This is what I told another person that asked a similar question:

"My go to is Arbonne's Protein Shakes (chocolate and vanilla). I'm biased because I have been around Arbonne since I was 12, but now I am a consultant. Regardless, their shakes are incredible (vegan, gluten-free, gmo-free, smells and tastes amazing unlike some whey protein shakes). They are also free of artificial ingredients."

I would definitely look into this. They use pea, brown rice, and cranberry proteins which are some of the most digestible forms of protein for your body Smiley smile If you'd like I can send you more detailed information about the ingredient policy etc. Just let me know!

I drink GNC Leanshakes. The premade ones, because im super lazy in the morning! I enjoy the chocolate ones. They are $25 for a pack of 12, so a little over $2 each. Even less if you use coupons and sign up for GNC's rewards program. So me, that's pretty cheap. They sell powder as well.

I've lost 14 pounds since February working out 3 times a week and I drink a shake every morning. Smiley smile

@Stacy go on line and read the story about them. There are a lot of shady practices that are attached to Herbalife right now including a multimillion dollar suit being brought on them by former distributors.

If you can't open a club without having your name brand on the front signage something is essentially wrong.

My go-to smoothie is a peanut butter, or any kind of nut butter that I happen to be in the mood for, and bananas with unsweetened almond milk and vanilla protein powder. I try to stick with organic as much as I can but this combination is generally how I do my smoothies. I try to find recipes that don't require a half ton of Greek yogurt since the dairy messes with my stomach and makes me feel sick later. The berry ones also tend to be a bit too tart for my tastes which is why I generally stick to nut butter and bananas. If I want it to be a bit sweeter, I put some honey in it.

I've never seen the benefits of Shakeology or other MLA alternatives. Most end up being too expensive with questionable ingredients, in my opinion. Making a smoothie from scratch has always been my favorite way to go.
