Altering my Engagement Ring!!!

Christine, on February 6, 2016 at 5:41 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 44

I love my diamond... I wished it had been a bit larger, but it's the perfect diamond, literally. He went with quality versus quantity. But, my friend works for a jeweler and brought me there today to look at wedding bands. My setting is low so every wedding band would not fit properly. I don't like the look of rounded bands. She asked if I would be willing to switch the band itself to one that pops the diamond up higher. I tried on a solitaire with the same size diamond as mine (.70 Carats), with five prongs versus my four prong. Holy shit! The ring looks fab! And even more amazing with the wedding band(s). I'm actually doing stackable. So, I decided to change the setting. I'm having a conversation with my fiancé tonight. Basically, the wedding bands weren't siting right with what he got me, and the jeweler said that give prongs protects it better.

Do you think your FH will be offended by the convo?

Personally I like the thinner band better but I can see how it stands taller. Just make sure to explain it to him that it will work better with your bands vs. I hate what you picked out for me. Framing your reasoning helps a lot!

I think he will want me to be happy. And it's his diamond, just a different setting... Actually quite similar, but the purpose ultimately was for the ring to sit correctly. It was bonus to find that the new setting enhanced the diamond. The setting brings out the perfection of the diamond even more because it's elevated from my finger. I hope he would agree.

Christine, as long as you say it like that, I think you're fine. Leave out the "I wanted a bigger diamond" part from above.

Yea I like the original band better too. The stackable rings aren't sitting flush against the engagement ring either. Over time, this will create scratches on the rings since they'll constantly be bumping and moving around.

Fair warning- i have a very tall ring- and I hit it on EVERYTHING.

I would never change mine- but I wouldnt' be mad if I hadn't gotten a slightly shorter ring. It's annoying and catches on EVERYTHING.

But- I would agree with MrsSept- frame it as - it show cases the diamond better and it's actually properly set that way.

But if he is like most of the guys I know he probably won't really care either way.

Totally leave out the "wish it was a bigger stone" thought though LOL

I actually prefer the thinner band. But I have tiny hands.

Your ring pops, and it's gorgeous. I actually wanted a solitaire similar to yours at first. I love my ring. I also realized FH chose that my ring for me, and was so proud of it when he proposed. I could see the love & light in his eyes! Why would I ever want to replace that moment/memory?

I love my low profile setting! I see what you mean, though OP. Approach this subject with extreme care. You don't want to risk hurting your FI's feelings. Of course he wants you to be happy, but the point is he put a lot of thought and money into buying a gift for you and no matter how you say it, all he may hear is, "I don't like what you bought and I want something better."

I will note that my ring is also high (low wedding bands) and it snags on everything. I love it and wouldn't change what my DH picked out but it gets fuzz in it a lot Smiley smile

My ring raised pretty high as well and I am constantly snagging it on everything, but I'm so in love with the ring!

Mine is also raised and I have a bad tendency to walk into walls a lot lolz...my watches are all scratched up. I have nightmares that one day I'll hit the ring clean off! So just be careful with it lolz.

It doesn't appear to be flush with the band in the new setting even. I would keep looking because if you're going to go to the trouble of changing the ring you should get something that really works for the reason you are switching. The prongs in the new ring are very wide at the base instead of cutting in.

I personally like the thinner band... although FH may want you to be happy... I think he will feel hurt.

I have the same issue. I can't find a wedding band that works with my emerald cut e-ring. Instead of changing it, we decided I'd get a band I love and just wear the seperately. I can't see myself ever wearing two rings anyway. I can wear them on opposite hands or wear one one day and the other the next. This is my e-ring, for reference.
