Alterations on illusion necklines?

Amanda, on August 17, 2016 at 4:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Can you alter the neckline if it's illusion? I like this dress a lot but upon closer inspection realized the neckline is a sheer illusion that comes up almost like a crew neck; see attached photo for what I mean. Can a seamstress alter it to be like a v-neck or something? Anyone have experience with that?

My dress has an illusion neck like this. I'm not sure why you would want to cut it if it's so sheer anyway. I personally don't think it would look right cut into a V, but you would have to talk to a seamstress to find out if it would ruin the structural integrity of the top of the dress.

I'm not a seamstress but I think cutting the illusion would make the straps fall down.

I think illusion necklines are the enemy of the pale bride. I'm following this with great interest.

I have a illusion neck on my second dress but I wouldn't suggest cutting it. It will take the illusion away. I'm not a seamstress but if you take it to a local one I'm sure they will be willing to do whatever do the dress to make you happy.

A lot of the dresses I have tried on had illusion necklines. The ones that did, no one really liked the look of them. My aunt even asked can you take off that netting!!? Lol. I was wondering if this was possible too. I will probably pick a dress without an illusion neckline, but who knows!

The whole point is that its' creating a floating shape- if you cut the structure of that- odds are it's going to mess with how the lace (none structured part) is going to lay on your skin.

you can PROBABLY make it work- but it IS a gamble.

It looks as though it might be easier to make it into a strapless sweetheart. But, in that case, why not just buy a strapless sweetheart?

Can you? Yes. Will it be glaringly obvious? Absolutely.

You see that line at the model's throat? That's the hem of the illusion fabric. If it was altered to a V neck or lowered, guess what will also make a glaring, obvious V down your chest? The hem.

    Bad idea.

If you like the stuff on the sides, but not necessarily the collar bone coverage, Mori Lee makes a cute dress that has a more sheer strap, but is V-neck.

@mna, that's what I thought at first but then I was thinking if they added some dainty lace edging to the seam where they make the V, it may look more natural? Like this photo attached, it's a similar concept but without the illusion part.

They should be able to cut it and do a small invisible hem outlining the lace appliqués and tighten the straps to fit.
