Alterations - Anyone go to Kleinfeld?

SB821, on December 17, 2014 at 11:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

Hello! I've recently bought this dress (below) at Kleinfeld in NYC. When you buy, they lock in an alteration price, should you use their services when the dress comes in. The price will include everything, whether it's one nip here or 500 changes everywhere. The price? $695. Yes, it's NYC and yes it could be a steal if you're concerned or adding/changing things, but it could also be a total rip-off. I'm assuming I'll only need a hem and a bustle, but I can't know for sure. So: go with the ease of Kleinfeld and fork over the cash, or find another alteration place and chance it? NOTE: I'm new to NYC and don't have the first clue where to find a reputable and trustworthy seamstress for this sort of thing. Thanks!

Well for my dress i needed a hem and busesel...that cost me about $400.00 and this was from a boutique. i think just look around and get prices from other places to see if what you are paying is a fair price.

when will you be able to find out exactly what you need done to your dress?

If it were me I would honestly spend the money to have them handle it. I wouldn't want to chance finding a less than great seamstress on my own and having to pay even more to have the dress corrected.

The dress gets in at the end of May. I don't know if Kleinfeld does it like other boutiques, where if you open the box then they don't do the alterations and you need to go somewhere else. The concern is that, I think, I have to just accept using Kleinfeld or foregoing them before I know what I'll really need.

Thanks, ladies. That's what I was thinking, but I needed some validation that $700 was in any way worth it for alterations. Whatever, just another check to write... Smiley smile

I was going to say, honestly $695.00 isn't that crazy anywhere. When I was talking to a dress shop about alterations they were saying a hem and bustles would be a few hundred without anything else. Thankfully I found an amazing that was really working with me when we were moving our wedding up due to a family emergency. They ended up getting my alterations done (didn't need much) very quickly and didn't change me anything for the any of the alterations including the bustles.

Plus the people there are used to the dresses they have! They know what they need to do and can just get it done quickly

I don't think that sounds crazy for NYC. I'd honestly like the ease of the set price.

    Very pretty dress, BTW.

I went to Ally's Bridal in Hoboken-- she also charges a flat fee regardless of what is done-- and it was I think $485 for my particular "level" of dress (she bases the price on the amount of beadwork and lace the dress has, so an all lace dress would be cost more to alter than a simple dress, regardless of the amount of work done).

Thank you again for all the help, and for the compliments! It's a Lazaro dress, and OMG I'm so excited.

Sounds like you already got your answer, but I bought my dress at Kleinfeld in September and agreed to their alteration price. It just seemed easier to me to agree to that price for all alterations than to take the dress elsewhere and hope to find a good seamstress, especially since I have seen on here that alterations will typically cost up to $500+ in this area anyway.

And 8815wedding - you were happy with their alteration service? I've heard horror stories, though I take some of it with a grain of salt since some people might be expecting some TV-ready experience and not reality.

I just bought my dress at Kleinfeld's in November and at first was like AHHH it's that much?? But after thinking about it i really feel like it's worth it. They have some of the best seamstresses there and it could cost around the same at another seamstress in the area. I know someone who got their dress from a bridal store in Manhasset on LI and they did such a bad job during all of her appointments they did it for FREE. and then the day of her wedding the top of her dress didnt it. i would die!! I think you made the right choice by sticking with them !!! and ps your dress is beautiful!!!

Beautiful dress. I would pay to have the proper alterations done at Kleinfeld's. $695 isn't that much, especially in the NYC area.

My dress hasn't come in yet and my wedding isn't until August, so no news yet on whether I'm happy that I agreed to their alteration price lol, but I will keep you updated.

I would stick with them. God forbids something happens to the dress, it would be on them. They are very familiar with the quality of dresses they sell. I would be more relaxed knowing they would handle it. Gorgeous dress, and the price seems fair to the NYC area. Good luck!

Phew! The Internet has validated me. I appreciate it. And 8815 - sorry! Just realized you're only getting married a week before me! Maybe I'll see you in the alteration suite at Kleinfeld Smiley smile
