Allergies and the wedding day

Brittny, on April 7, 2017 at 12:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

After seeing a runny nose post I just realized I might be battling a runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing that day. I usually am okay but this spring has been killing me! I even have a cracked skin rash around my nose from blowing into tissues so much. I finally took zyrtec after being faithful to benedryll and I feel a lot better. Any tips or advice on handling seasonal allergies??

I am going through the same allergy struggle right now as you [Also hello, date twin!]

I would say make sure you have been loyally taking allergy meds that work, on time, for like a week before the day. Even if you feel you don't need them. That way even if you miss a dose during the reception you should have enough in your system to hold out through the evening. And maybe give a couple doses of the medicine to your MoH to carry with her so you can grab one if you do start feeling less than ideal as the evening wears on? But I would say aim for a 24 hour pill that you can take early in the morning so that taking another isnt necessary.

ETA: I find benadryll is good for fast relief, but stuff like zyrtec is better for prolonged use. So maybe stick to taking zyrtec and have some benadryll on hand to supplement as needed

Thank you so much! Thats super helpful, I wouldn't have remembered to bring some or even think to ask my MOH to hold it for me

I agree! My asthma flares up during the spring/summer and my Dr told me to take allergy meds (I use Flonase) every day, consistently, even if I don't think I need it. It really helps keep it in check!

I'm going to say, I switched to the FloNase spray in the morning, but I got their new gentle mist, and I take Allegra at night. This was per my doctor to do this combo. So far it's helping. But I would talk to your doctor before doing something like that. By themselves, neither the spray nor the pills were helping and I had a comstant nasal drip, so she wanted me to do a combo of it instead. I don't mind the spray, and the gentle mist one is a lot easier to use. You could try a spray

My doctor said to take the Allegra and/or Singulair (my med) in the night. Apparently it works better for some reason if you do. My co-worker takes Allegra at night and Flonase in the morning. When she does this her allergies are SO much better.

I have awful allergies. The thing that works best for me is Claratin D. It's more expensive than regular Claratin but it works. My prescription allergy pill is cheap but it makes me fall asleep

I actually changed my wedding date due to my allergies. I'll also be taking zyrtec the night before or early that morning.

I second Flonase - I have terrible allergies and this has helped a ton! I usually do two sprays in each nostril in the morning, but I'll probably do an extra one before pictures since they flowers may set it off a little.

I'm currently taking zyrtec and it's been working out a lot better than the other OTC meds i've taken in the past. I also use local honey in my tea in the morning. I've heard it helps with symptoms. On days i don't take meds i drink extra tea and normally feel a lot better than without it. So maybe visit your local farmers market for some honey.

After a while Claritin, then zyrtex stopped working for me. I love Allegra!

I have horrible allergies and used to take Benadryl. Check with your doctor before you do this, but I've been taking Zyrtec and Sudafed (the small red kind you have to get behind the counter because it's used to make meth) together for years. Just one dose of Zyrtec a day and the Sudafed as needed. Works like a charm.

ETA: this is what my pediatrician suggested back when I was like 12, so I've been going strong with this for about 16 years.

My allergist told me you can take multiple doses of Zyrtec after I confessed to taking one in the morning and one at night. I have THE WORST ALLERGIES and this multiple dose method is the only thing that keeps them under control. I'm actually starting allergy shots after the wedding because I really struggle with allergies year round (allergic to trees, grass, molds, cats, dogs... everything). Flonaze is also helpful if I have a particularly bad runny/itchy nose. If you have itchy eyes you could look into a prescription eye drop (mine works wonders).

ETA: The only thing is that multiple zyrtecs sometimes make me drowsy, but this is only if I take two at the same time. Which I do sometimes, but not often.

Sinus rinses! I do them along with zyrtec and Flonase. You can do the neti pot but I like Neil Med better. It's like $15 at Target and comes with the packets that dissolve in room temperature water. Get distilled water from the store (like $1 for a giant bottle) because tap water has metal ions that can irritate your nose and make it worse. It takes a little getting used to, but I think it's helping.

Yes you can mix Zyrtec with pseudophedrine. Those two combined create Zyrtec D. Xyzal is a prescription equivalent to Zyrtec D (that recently became available over the counter).

ETA: sleep with your windows closed as well

I will be taking a non drowsy allergy pill (loratadine) a few days leading up to and on the day of. Our venue is all outdoors with a rose garden, orange grove, and various trees and other flowers. It's BEAUTIFUL but makes my eyes puff up to where I can't see lol so the allergy pill always works for me. Just test out what you're gonna use beforehand and ask your doctor about it

In addition to allergy medicine, never underestimate a good humidifier! Oh and a little coconut oil to help with some of the dryness. Vaseline works well but it feels very gloopy to me. And face steamers work very well too. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil and it'll open your sinuses back up.

I'm afraid for my daughter she is 7 and I just found out a few weeks ago . She has allergies to dogs , dust and tree pollen. Spring hasn't started yet here in Upstate NY but will soon.

Do you have a pollen tracker on your phone? So you would know the night before to take the meds?

Stay on the zyrtec until after your wedding. Allergies suck and unfortunately they can be triggered at anytime even if you never had them before.

Vaseline for the cracked skin rash around your nose from blowing so much. I take it with me everywhere during allergy season

Hi date twinsssss! I have chronic sinusitis and horrible allergies. If they're that bad I highly recommend going to an allergist and the allergy medication is way more effective and honestly way freaking cheaper. I take levozectrizine (sp?) Every night year round. This spring is already kicking my ass. Also, Flonase is okay, dymista was a pretty awesome Flonase hybrid, qnasal is nice since it's less medicine more air forcing so you don't get that post nasal drip. Saline solution is super safe, twice a day cause it cleans our your face before you try using any allergy nasal sprays. I'm allergic to grass and trees all the way to God damn fruit ( they grow on the pollinated trees, it's that bad of pollen allergy) that I have actually moved my wedding indoors to avoid being a hivey mess. Good luck!
