Alcohol on a budget?!?

Mrs. Keo, on October 17, 2009 at 7:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

I'm on a budget, so alcohol isn't my main concern. Don't get me wrong I want it & may need it. My crowd of friends & family are quite different. It may help losen everybody up. I'm thinking a Keg. Most ppl I know are beer drinkers & it would save me up to 50%. Is it trashy though? I don't think it's that bad, but what will my guest think?

Not at all, everyone is different and you know your guests, if that is what they drink, then IMO, you are giving them what they want Smiley smile Maybe you can also have some wine for anyone that might not want to really drink but a glass of wine would be nice Smiley smile

Oh and also, you could have 1 signature drink, maybe something inexpensive like a fruity type drink Smiley smile

I think it will be fine. Hay if my guest want to complain about it, they can leave. I just don't want to disapoint his side of the family. Oh well! LOL

If you do a keg make sure you don't use the plastic cups! now that would be trashy.

I think beer and Margaritas would be perfect... and you can get a ton of decent cheap tequila at Costco....

If you want to get some cheap wine, I'd HIGHLY recommend going to BevMo (www.bevmo.com) - they are having their '5-Cent Wine Sale' right now - you can either order things online, or you can go into a store. Basically, you can get nice wines that they have on sale - and, say you pay $5.99 for a bottle, the second bottle of that same wine is just 5 cents! I'm buying a couple of cases of sparkling wine so we can have a toast and am getting a BARGAIN on it by buying it from BevMo's 5-cent sale. Good luck!! :-)

Oh, and totally agree with Brian above re: cheap tequila (and cheap large cases of beer, if you wanted to avoid a keg!) at Costco. They are awesome for inexpensive alcohol too! Kegs can sometimes actually be rather expensive when you compare them in price to cans or bottles that you can buy in bulk - just depends on what you want to serve.

I agree with Traci_Bob. My friend had a keg at her wedding and it wasn't trashy at all! They chose their favorite micro-brew and it was served in Pilsner glasses.

There's nothing wrong with beer on tap, it's all in the presentation...as Brian said, if you handed it out in red plastic cups like at a frat party that would be trashy! Or if you had the keg in the middle of the dance floor for people to do keg stand on then yes, it would be trashy! LOL but I'm assuming these aren't part of your plans. My wedding what at an historic mansion, very elegant, but many people chose to drink the tap beer. I don't see anything wrong with it especially if you know ahead of time it's the most popular choice with your guests, its all about being a good hostess after all!

We are also on a tight budget, and we are still trying to decide what to do. I talked to a few bartenders who have done weddings, and thier suggestions were: 1 or 2 kegs(if you want selections) and you can also get 1/2 kegs, depending on how many people. Also, get a few types of wine(if its that type of crowd). Also, the signature drink thing is big!! Another thing is if you have enough time, you could slowly buy bottles of alcohol.....especially when they are on sale, and it won't be such a huge chunk of $$. Not trashy at all!! good luck!

I agree with Laura and Brian. I just attended a wedding where the keg is behind the bar and the bartender served it to the guests in glasses. I didn't think any less of them lol Smiley smile plus this can be a cheap way to provide beer if they let you bring in your own keg! My venue would charge like $500 for a keg I could get for $100 on my own!

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

We are deciding between the keg vs. bootle beer dilemma. We are going to check the prices and see. I think if we go with the keg we are only going to get a 1/2 keg. We have a couple of friends that are really heavy drinkers and we would blow our entire wedding budget trying to keep them happy. Our venue is pretty laid back so we can bring in our on and they can BYOB after they float the keg. We are going to do red wine sangria for the non-beer drinkers. It is a good way to cover up a inexpensive wine and we can make big batches a few days ahead (we are doing our own catering) and have one less thing to worry about day of.

Oh, another thing. Depending on your vendor you may be able to return unopened bottles of beer, wine, etc.

I bartend for weddings and a lot of times the couple will choose a signature cocktail, like a flavored martini, and then beer/wine. That keeps the cost down...

It could be trashy but not if you make it your own. You know how some people do chocolate fountains? They have a whole table set up for it. If you do a set up to make it a focal point, it would be fun and add character to your day. You could do an old fashioned keg and have your names/wedding dates engraved in to keep after the big day. I don't know if you have favors already but, depending on your budget, you could set up beer mugs with your name/wedding date on them. Guests could use them and take them with. Smiley smile-

Great place to get good, inexpensive wine is Trader Joes. Cases run around 38.00. Check them out
