Alcohol at the rehearsal dinner?

MelissaErin, on August 18, 2016 at 2:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 34

We will have a full open bar at the wedding, but I'm wondering what to do about the rehearsal? I want it to be more casual. My first choice was Portillos, a famous hot dog place in Chicago, but they don't book private parties during the holiday season =(... Now we are looking at some other places around us and were just wondering about including alcohol? What have you guys done or what are you planning on?

Casual is good. Alcohol is good.

We're doing a lamb roast and beer/wine for the rehearsal dinner. Also, super casual. I think if you're having a rehearsal/welcome dinner then both dinner and drinks should be covered.

We're doing lunch at an Italian place, so probably no booze for us. But, I would say if you end up at a restaurant that serves it, you'll need to cover your guest's drinks. It would be tacky to announce that people had to cover their own beverages, and rude to make them pay up after the meal.

For dinner, you should offer alcohol. Either let guests just order what they want off the menu, or make a few selections of beer and wine and only offer those. You would pay of course.

We are having it at the hotel we are staying at and are going to get catering though an Italian restaurant (olive garden or bucca). Getting our own beer and wine to save money.

@MelissaErin do you live in Chicago? I used to live there. What about Piece Pizza in Wicker Park? AMAZING, HUGE pizzas and house brewed beer. I bet several pizzas and pitchers (if they sell in pitchers? I actually can't recall right now) would go a long way. (Parking would be a pain in the you-know-where in that neighborhood, though. Maybe you could arrange some transportation, or encourage people to take public transportation/carpool/uber.) It might be worth giving them a call and seeing what they can do for you.

We are going to a pizza place near our venue and rehearsal dinner guests will definitely be able to order alcohol if they choose.

FH's parents plan to host the rehearsal dinner and I know they will do something like the first round or 2 of drinks is hosted and then cash bar after that. Trying to decide if it is rude of FH and I to pick up the drink tab that they don't pay for.

@MaidenName - the cash bar is the rude part. You should pick up the tab for anything your FILs don't pay for.

We had our RD at a restaurant, so yes, we had alcohol if our guests wanted to order it!

We are also doing our rehearsal dinner at a restaurant. Alcohol is charged by consumption (outside of the banquet meal package, which includes soda/tea/coffee) so FIL just pays for the alcohol portion along with the final bill.

I'm not sure what we are doing. I wanted pizza and beer originally but FMIL has taken over (extremely grateful for this). I know there will be booze. It probably won't be a bar type situation, more like a restaurant where we can order drinks in the usual way.
