Airplane Wedding Dress

Jessica, on September 19, 2019 at 12:12 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
Have any of you ladies ever flown with a wedding gown or are going to fly with your gown. I don't want my dress to get lost between the US and Ireland. I'm about 90% sure we are going to be flying via Delta, but we still have yet to decide.

My understanding is that they will often allow you to carry on the dress, and hang it in the closet at the front. But you should check with the airline to make sure.

I’ve had to fly with bridesmaid dresses and I’ll have to fly with my wedding dress. Your dress and his attire should definitely be your carry on. I wouldn’t risk checking it in a suitcase. Most airlines have closets where you can hang your dress. Call the airline and ask. If they have closets on your plane, you usually just talk to the flight crew as you board, tell them it’s your wedding dress and the flight attendants will help you.

I travel a LOT and its common for brides to travel with their dresses as carryon "bags". Its not a problem. If the airline cant accommodate hanging the dress ( very rare definitely call ahead to be sure) it also fits in the overhead compartment. A quick steam at your destination and its perfect for your big day.

I plan to carry-on and have it steam afterward.

Do you actually put it in a carry on bag, or put it in a garment bag then in the overhead compartment?

I just flew with my dress, I flew delta and was allowed to put in the closet. But it probably would have been better if I laid it across the luggage in the overhead bin as the closet was very small I still had to kind of fold the bottom up so that it fit. It was in a garment bag that I bought when I bought my dress and it actually traveled very well, was not wrinkled I just took it out and hung it up and let it lay out once I got to the hotel.

Wow, I’m so glad I found this thread! We are having a destination wedding and I was planning on renting an SUV and driving the 13 hours just so I didn’t have to check my dress at the airline and risk them losing it! I had NO idea most airlines had a place to hang them for you! How cool!! Looks like I’ll be making some calls today haha! Thanks WW gals!

I just shipped my dress yesterday via FedEx. One of our connecting flights is extremely small and doesn’t have a first class closet so just check with the airline for the size of your plane.

I have from Texas to Vegas, best bet put it in a small suitcase and have it be your carry on luggage. Hang it up asap.

Garment bag with hanger sticking out of top . It can be hung in airplane closet or placed in overhead bin. Versatile
There are lugages sold for this ( opens flat and has opening for hanger, rolls up )
You can also use the garment bag from store/ dry cleaner

I did! I folded it up nicely and paid for the overhead storage. When we got to the hotel I took it out and let it hang in the bathroom so the steam from showering would get any wrinkles out but honestly it wasn't really that wrinkly and didn't need any extra steaming. I picked a dress that wasn't a huge ballgown so it would fit in a carry on on a plane because I didn't trust shipping it or having it go in luggage under the plane which sometimes gets lost.

Make sure you call first. We flew Spirit and they do not have a place to hang anything so I gently rolled mine up and put it in my carry on.

My friend flew with hers to Costa Rica last year. We did ask if they could hang it in the closet but they said no. She held onto the dress until everyone was boarded and settled and then laid the dress across the top everyone elses stuff in the overhead. She didn't have any problems. I will say, it was more of a mermaid style dress, not a big ball gown which made it a little easier to put in the overhead, and she chose a fabric that would not easily wrinkle as well.
