Have you tried BHLDN? They’re part of Anthropologie but they have a sale right now and they definitely have some dresses under $500. Hope this helps!

Look at Azazie! You can order dresses you like for try-on for a nominal cost. Their BM dresses are really nice quality at pretty reasonable prices, and I've heard/read the same about their wedding gowns. They have several for under $500. Good luck!

What kind if dress are you looking for? Some styles tend to be more expensive, the first step might be trying some alternative styles

Consider looking to see if your area has any resale shops. We have a store here that doesn't sell any dresses for over $700. And a lot of the dresses have never been worn! I also second BHLDN!

I just saw this dress on Lulus while hunting for a engagement photo dress. I think it's so gorgeous! It's on sale and has quite a few sizes left for anyone looking for something affordable!

I got mine at forever 21. I kind of recommend just finding any kind of white dress. Or whatever color you want. Think of it as a dress you want to wear to your wedding rather than it specifically be labeled as a wedding dress. When you do that, it tends to be cheaper. Find a prom dress or evening dress or bridesmaid dress in white or whatever, but basically take yourself out of a category of just wedding dress.
