Addressing envelopes: Which address to use? And i might just hand-address....

Rachel, on June 10, 2019 at 2:50 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

What do you think? We are supposed to be closing on a house on Friday but my invites need to go out ASAP, like faster than we will probably be in that house unless they unexpectedly and miraculously hand the keys over immediately. We're currently in a rental that receives all sorts of old residents' mail. Obviously we will have mail forwarded when the time comes, but I'd hate for something like this to have the heightened potential of getting lost in the mail or coming late. If I address them to my parents' house, well, they might very well end up lost there as well. Maybe his parents' house but I'd have to ask.

Also, partially due to the above situation, I didn't buy address labels. I REALLY don't want to jinx anything with this house. I figure I'll just hand-write the addresses on all the envelopes. I did for my RSVPs and didn't think it was a big deal, but I already have a few family members kind of turning their noses up at corners we've had to cut in order to even accommodate such a large family........ do you think hand-written (not calligraphy) addresses on invites is tacky? I know I shouldn't even care what anyone thinks but for some reason I'm still asking.

Could you get a PO Box for a few months?
We hand wrote all of our STDs, invites, and thank you notes!

That's super tricky - I wouldn't address them to your current (old) place, since in my experience, not everything that is supposed to be forwarded actually ends up getting forwarded. And if you won't be moving into the new place for a while then it doesn't make sense to use that address either. I'd talk with each set of parents and maybe a trusted bridal party member to find someone who can collect your RSVP cards for you.

Is collecting RSVPs through your wedding website an option though? We'll just be using online-only RSVPs through our Zola wedding website next year, if that's helpful at all.

Handwritten addresses should be fine, and you can print address labels yourself at the last minute if needed.

I would do a P.O. Box so that you know they won’t get misplaced in the system or in someone else’s house.

I agree with a P.O. Box. They’re usually a pretty reasonable price and then you don’t have to worry about someone else hanging on to them for you.

Thank you, everyone! I totally thought about printing my own labels as I clicked on the tab to read your responses, lol Smiley tongue

I never would have even thought of a PO Box, so thank you for that! I might also ask his parents, as they're pretty close by and have never once misplaced a piece of mail that we had sent there..... but then again, this is a lot of little envelopes, so the POB is a great alternative in case they don't like the idea.

I would just ask his parents. That's the easiest option without spending extra on a PO box. Seems unnecessary to do that if your FMIL is willing to help out. And really all she has to do is collect them into a pile, you obviously will go through them!

Is there a reason you don't want to wait a few more days to send out your invites? You have time if you're getting married in September. You're closing in just a couple of days so you can just print out address labels with your new address and have them sent there. As soon as you close the house is yours, you get the keys at closing. Is there a tenant in it?

Congratulations on your (almost) new home!

I'm printing some labels on sticker paper as an alternative to writing the addresses or getting calligraphy. I think they're turning out pretty well! I used some of the florals from my invite.

We're doing 'wrap around' labels and I think it looks pretty elegant! I'm going to print them on the full-sheet label paper and trim them myself.

Pictured below on a simple piece of cardstock because the envelopes I ordered are the wrong color. Smiley sad

I would choose a relatives house for any wedding mail.

Thank you also for the congrats on the home. 😄 I did end up putting FMIL’s address on the envelopes, after consulting with her. She’s like 10 minutes away from where we are now.

I might be wrong, but I am under the impression that our specific contract is giving the sellers an extra month to get packed up and out.... but this might not even end up happening because I think they had a house already when our offer was accepted. In any case, we’ll be between the two addresses for a month or two anyway and it just seems like a lot of things could go wrong with all the variables.

I had the same issue - except I didn't realize I was moving - DO NOT TRUST THE USPS TO FORWARD YOUR MAIL!! I have to stop at the old house and check the mail every day because they don't forward anything! The ones they attempted to forward said "unable to forward' because the names on the RSVP didn't match the forms from the post office exactly.

I wish I would have just used my parent's address so there were no issues!

I would definitely go with a P.O. Box...

We sent our invites out a little less than 3 months out, and I was told that was early. Can you get a PO box temporarily?
