Adding straps to a strapless dress?

AmyandJosh, on August 5, 2016 at 9:49 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

Hey guys! So I have these two dresses that I really love (I'll attach pictures) and I'm leaning more toward the all-over lace one because that was a feature I really wanted. What I especially love about the one with beading is the thin straps and also somewhat the shape of the neckline. I like the idea of having straps to feel extra secure and I also just like the look of them.

What I would ideally like done is to have some scalloped lace added around the edge of the neckline, which would lead into thin straps. What do you guys think? Also, not sure if this would be near impossible, but with the addition of straps, I'm thinking I would like a lower back to the dress. Can that be made lower?

Thanks! Smiley smile

I also love the lace over dress more than the other one so I support that decision (although they are both gorgeous)! As far as the changes, I would suggest talking to a seamstress because she would know best. You could get an initial consultation from the in house one at the salon or research other seamstresses in your area. I know that when I was trying on gowns, adding straps/sleeves to strapless gowns was always a question I had if the store associate insisted I tried one on. I don't want to be pulling my dress up all night! When they showed me examples of the different kinds of straps I could add, I definitely like some on certain dresses better than others.

I loveeee the first one. Your shape is amazing! I think it is beautiful as is. You don't appear to be top heavy at all so I am not sure that I would add straps. Ask your seamstress about adding them but honestly I wouldn't. It's simply stunning!

Thank you guys! Smiley smile you're right, I'm not really top heavy (though the way the dress was pulled in the photo it does flatten me out a touch!), so I don't really neeeeeeed straps... But I think I like the look of them Smiley smile

Asking the in house seamstress is a good plan! ??

A properly fitted strapless dress you won't need straps - especially because you are not big busted! Typically they will not be able to alter the back significantly because of the structure of the dress. If you want to do THAT many alterations do a dress, I think then it's not the right dress for you! That being said, if you like the look of straps I'm sure they can be added. You need to consult with a seamstress.

I love the first one, it looks amazing on you! PP's are right, a well fitted strapless dress will be plenty secure. Maybe add a necklace if you want to add a little something to the top without adding straps. Or if you really just like the look of straps, just ask your seamstress. They usually have a few options with them to see what you would like.

Hi @AmyandJosh! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default icons) so that we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other posters.

Both of those dresses are stunning, and the first one looks AMazing on you!! Adding straps is definitely doable and should be a fairly easy alteration. Lowering the back of your dress is tougher and will depend on the structure of your dress like @annakay511 said. Definitely ask the seamstress!! It all depends on the individual dress so much Smiley smile

I actually have tossed around the idea of doing a sparkly necklace instead of straps! Showing here:

I LOVE that first dress!! I definitely don't think you need to add straps but it shouldn't be impossible. I also love the look of the necklace! Can't go wrong with that dress really!

OMG the first one is so gorgeous! Please please get that one! You don't need any straps if it fits correctly, unless you want that look.

You are gorgeous. I love the lace dress on you as well, I definitely don't think you need a strap. I think a strand of pearls may look nice with the color of your dress as well but the sparkly necklace works too!

I bought a strapless corset and I'm adding wide lace straps to it. I'm also really busty so I know I'll feel more secure but I also just prefer the look. I had to buy an extra yard of lace which ran $800 to get it done. I'll actually see the finished product Aug 19th! My alterations cost was $500 but I also lowered the neckline of the bodice and cinched the skirt. All done with an in house seamstress at the boutique I got the dress from.

It's gorgeous as is. The addition of straps would not take away from it's beauty so I would say go with what makes you feel the most comfortable.
