Adding a corset to my dress

Mrs. Williams, on September 25, 2012 at 3:29 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 18

I was just wondering if anyone has or is adding a corset to their dress...not because it will make it look pretty, but because the dress may not fit otherwise. I bought my dress back in July, and it fit like a glove. I felt so confident in it. I don't know how I managed this but only two months later it no longer fits. And I am not talking like it is just tight, I am talking it will not zip up. I talked with FH and we decided to put a corset in it. I think it will make the dress prettier, but also I won't have to stress about being this perfect size because with a zipper it just has to fit perfectly.

Has anyone else had to do this? Luckily I think it will work with my dress style wise. Hopefully DB does a good job making such a big alteration to my dress...Here is the link to my dress from DB:

I did, but my dress actually came with the option of buttons or corset so I ordered the corset right off the bat. They told me I could gain or lose a dress size and not have to worry.

On the other hand, you have a while till your wedding so you still have plenty time to make it fit again without the corset if they say they can't do it or its not in the budget!

Shannon-Like a corset for underneath of the dress? I need something to suck me in so I might try that...or maybe some spanx?

EdieKristen-Yeah I know I have time but I get really stressed out about losing weight. I just had a fitness test today (I am in the military) and I am definitely not in the shape that I used to be in. It is so discouraging. I just have nightmares that even if I lose the weight that I will be bloated or something the day of and not fit into it.

I had mine altered to corset and I LOVED it!! I hate zipper backs (no offense to anyone that has one) and I would have even loved button up, but I felt having a corset would be a better investment.. which it was, seeing how I'm 3 months pregnant now ;P

I had the zipper taken out of mine, and a corset back put and oh my gosh!! I am SO happy i did!! Not only did it look great, but after dinner when i ate too much, i was able to sneak away with a couple of my maids and have them loosen it up a bit! So worth it! My advice, just find an experienced alterations vendor. It can be a bit daunting if they haven't done it before Smiley smile

There was a dress I tried on at DB and I was only going to buy it if I could do a corset back. However, I just bought a different gown that I am in love with that has a zipper back with buttons. One of my good friends had a corset back and she loved it! They are really pretty and you can fluctuate a little in size without being too worried

Thanks ladies. It is good to know that other people have done this.

Kiesha- I didn't even think of that! Now I think I definitely need it. I tend to get bloated when I eat so that would be awesome to be able to let out my dress a little and no one would even notice.

I am worried that DB won't be that good at it. They quoted me at $115 for the full corset. Sounds like a great price. My thoughts are that if they completely screw it up they have this dress and can give me a brand new one...if I take it somewhere else besides DB and they mess it up, I know I won't be able to get any help from DB since I had it altered somewhere else.

Hi Lauren - Why don't you ask Davids to do a size exchange on your dress? Also if you do go with the corset back from them be sure to figure in the cost of the corset strapping which is usually $115 plus $60 for the strapping - Otherwise you will have to tie it up with ribbon. Either way - good luck!!

A corset back looks great with your dress, btw!

Christine-I am sure they would exchange it for a bigger size, but then I worry that I will lose weight and it will be too big. My weight fluctuates so much. I will definitely ask them about the strapping thing though. I think it will look great with my dress as well. It will make the back of it a little more interesting.

The sample of my dress had a zipper with buttons over it but I opted to have the corset added. It looked gorgeous, and I definitely liked knowing that if i gained or lost a few lbs over the last few weeks before the wedding i'd still be able to get a perfect fit.

i also loved being cinched into that thing and knowing it wasn't gonna fall down!

I thought db was kind of expensive they are charging me $500 for alterations i felt like they ripped me off because the reason i wanted a corset was so i wouldnt have to take it in but they told me since my waste line is so small i would have to any way so im getting both then i needed it to be hemmed cust im short and my dress has a strapp that was way to big but they wouldnt remove it so i needed that to be taken in as well. $500 later they better not screw it up i have heard bad things

DB did my corset, it turned out just fine Smiley smile I don't think I have a picture of the back on here... but anyway, it really depends on the seamstress really, but mine was great and it wasn't expensive at all! I thought it would be around $300 for the corset, but it was like you said.. I thi

Mrs M - Here are a few pictures of your dress with the strap removed and a corset back added. Wedding was June 2012, this is Mom learning to tie the corset!

I have a corset in my dress and I love it because it will pull me in more to give me more curves. Enchant me more than what I already have.
