Adding a bit of color to my dress!

Allison, on July 27, 2016 at 12:44 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 31

I have a rather traditional wedding dress. It wasn't what I originally thought I wanted, but we found it at a really great deal, and when I put it on I felt pretty, like a bride! The only thing I would change is adding some color. Probably navy blue. I've been thinking about how to add color, but am having some trouble.

We are on a tight budget and tight timeline, which means DIY, which I don't mind at all, but I have really no ideas. I thought about adding a dark lace shirt as pictured, but I don't like how it looks.

I am thinking of replacing the lace up ribbon in the back to navy instead of white. I also purchased some navy blue flowers, and thought about adding them to the bottom, but I can't decide if I should or how to place them.

Nothing about us is traditional. My fiancee and I have been together 8 years and have 2 children together. I feel I want our wedding day to represent use, and we are not traditional. Ideas?

You could always add a colored belt or sash. That's pretty simple and affordable.

Maybe add a colored belt? I'm not crazy about the shirt at all. Or do a super colorful bouquet?

I vote for just changing the laces! I love that look.

I had thought about a belt or sash... But it's hard for me to imagine. I think I just need to try one on and see how it looks! Thanks Sam!

I agree HeatherB... Not digging the shirt either. Good idea on the bouquet, I actually haven't started on that either... Although I know my colors at least! Haha.

Maybe it'd be best to try to add color with accessories, like HeatherB suggested with the bouquet. What other accessories might work? I am clearly in unknown territory. Lol.

Thank you Lorith! I'm wondering that as well!

Thanks Kristen! I'll have to try one out and see how it looks. It definitely seems the simplest and easiest option!

I'm honestly not crazy about the shirt either. I like the idea of a colorful, sparkly belt or sash.

If you have the money, I would take it to a very good independent seamstress and ask about ideas of altering it to add colored trim or some very lightly colored tulle under the skirt. Here are some inspiration photos that might help.

I used to see pictures of people dyeing a crinoline and wearing that under the dress so color was subtly added. I always thought it looked cool. I'm not a dress expert so I don't know if that will work with yours but it might be something to look into

I vote changing the corset lacing and then adding a colorful choker and bracelet combo in the same color as the lacing.

I'm not a fan of the way the lace shirt looks with the dress. It just looks blocky.

I think changing the corset laces is a great idea! I love that pop of color on a dress! Also, if you're talented with a needle, maybe you could add a strip of the navy ribbon along the top of the neckline, to add some color to the front? I'd use a professional seamstress for this option, but just throwing it out here!

    I think it's a beautiful dress!

Thanks everyone for the nice and helpful responses! I completely agree the shirt has to go... It just doesn't work!

I'm going to change the lacing in the back to start and go from there. I'm also rather self conscious about my chubby arms, but I may have to get over it, because they would look better without the shirt, haha.

No on black lace. Pinterest may help. Very pretty dress. I like the navy ribbon add and the flowers could be really cool.

@FMP, sounds like something that would be perfect for your adopted daughter to help with.

I like changing out the corset back for a navy string. You could always add colored tulle, along with the string, underneath which I think would look amazing on your dress. It would all tie in together.

I love the idea, I don't love the long sleeves. I think PPs have offered a bunch of really subtle options that will give you a great pop of color! You look beautiful in the dress by the way!

Devon - I do like that idea! I'd want longer sleeves I think, and at this point I might go with white instead of a dark color. I feel the dress gives a delicate look, and a bold color on top might just be too much...

JennV - I had wondered that! I wasn't sure how it would look and I've never done anything like that before... Although I know how to sew, I've never done anything like this before!

Going to the Chapel - thanks! I already have navy shoes!!! But the dress is so long, no one will see them, haha! Smiley laugh

JoRocka - thank you for the links! Wasn't sure where to buy any of this stuff, outside of just Googling!

FutureMrs.M. - thank you for your compliment! Smiley laugh
