A son is only a son until he marries his wife

My MIL recently said to me "A daughter is a daughter for life, and a son is only your son until he marries his wife". Anyone else hear anything like that? Anyone else have a MIL that can't cut the umbilical cord? I was always under the assumption that a bride is supposed to cut ties with her family...

I was always under the assumption that a bride is supposed to cut ties with her family a little bit and take on the grooms family more but lately I have been seeing the opposite.

Taking that into account I can see why people feel that sons kind of drifts away from mothers..But they do have their own new family to take care of and things. I'm just glad my family is pretty much drama free!

@Kris ... he took it really hard. I actually avoided talking to him about his mom. The entire situation has hurt him and I know he's very angry and upset with his mom for all of what has happened. :-/ He actually loves my family and loves that we're all so close and accepting...I think my family has been very good for him.

What a dreadful question. You, my dear, only have him because of his mother, in a purely biological sense for certain, and perhaps in a myriad of other ways. If I were you, I wouldn't start my married life trying to remove my husband from his family. If you love him, you're hurting him. And it's just plain wrong.

"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." Genesis 2:24 KJV
I'm not religious, but many people are and find the above an appropriate description of what happens when people marry. (It would probably have been phrased to show that both people leave and cleave had it been written 400 years later.)
The verse goes:"A son is a son till he's got him a wifeBut your daughter's your daughter the rest of her life." Sometimes true, usually more complicated than that, but always better with the right rhythm.
