Erika., on April 25, 2017 at 5:38 PM

Not related to my wedding, but I saw that a classmate from high school started a GoFundMe for her wedding and is asking for $10k in donations and said "please help us have our dream wedding"...like WHAT?! Am I the only one who thinks this is so crazy!? I didn't even know this was allowed...is it?...

ETA: the girl who posted has not received any donations as of now. Been up about a week.

No different than a Jack and Jill, which is just a fundraiser for the couple! People do some crazy things.

I would be mortified if my daughter or son did that!

How is it entitled to want a wedding? Our parents got the weddings they wanted, why shouldn't we? Parents have an obligation to help their children, to provide for them. Why the double-standard when it comes to weddings? My grandparents paid for my parents' ENTIRE wedding. We are just looking for Some help, but it ALL went to our older siblings just because they happened to tie the knot first. So we are left with nothing, but still a HUGE expectation from our parents to have a big wedding with the whole extended family (which is MASSIVE). So we are Expected to do everything They want, but they aren't helping -- so how are we Supposed to pay for it then?

And how is asking wedding guests to pay for the wedding a bad thing? So these people are just going to show up and eat free food and drink free booze and dance to free entertainment?

You should be able to raise money for your wedding in whatever way you want, without judgements from people who settled instead of going for their dream.

So you're paying for the whole wedding then?

What else are they supposed to do if their "loving" parents don't financial support them?

They pay for it themselves, like 90% of couples do.

But the same people EXPECT an invitation to the wedding.

    Wedding guests are moochers.

If you really feel that way, elope.

But you'll attend as the parents, without having paid anything, and you're okay with that? You bring your child into this world and FORCE them to foot the bill for a party for a bunch of relatives they don't even know because it's "expected" to invite them?

Parents should pay for weddings. Period.

Parents who don't are cheap and greedy.

My parents didn’t pay for my wedding and they didn’t make me invite anyone I didn’t want to. I have zero obligation to my children to pay for an unnecessary party THEY want.

My thoughts exactly! It's a luxury, just like a honeymoon. Court elopement it is.

So when you have kids, you’ll pay for their entire wedding because it’s your responsibility to pay for a party?

my parents raised me to be independent and not rely on them, not insist they pay for a huge luxury party. Once I’m getting ready to start my own family, I think their obligation is over 🤷🏻‍♀️
