A GoFundMe...REALLY?!

Erika., on April 25, 2017 at 5:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 53

Not related to my wedding, but I saw that a classmate from high school started a GoFundMe for her wedding and is asking for $10k in donations and said "please help us have our dream wedding"...like WHAT?!

Am I the only one who thinks this is so crazy!? I didn't even know this was allowed...is it?

ETA: the girl who posted has not received any donations as of now. Been up about a week.

Haha, one of FH's friends has a go-fund-me set up for her divorce, so I guess people figure anything goes.

I heard about this on the radio recently. Crowd funding for weddings and for a 15k engagement ring. So sad

Interesting.. if only I would have thought of that before I paid for my own then I could have had the honeymoon that I really wanted instead of what I could afford because of the cost of the wedding. (Sarcasm)

It's so disturbing how many of these people post to this forum! Who thinks this is okay?

Hey if people are willing to donate that's their business. Personally, I think that it's tacky.

LOL, Erika, "I didn't even know this was allowed...is it?" Yep, it's allowed -- it's hideously tacky, screams of entitlement, and should shame the couple who have the nerve to post on a donation site that features children and adults suffering with terminal illnesses, and families who have been devastated by natural disasters. Fund our wedding, indeed. Fund it yourselves, Mr. and Mrs. Greed.

@Rachel that's exactly what I was thinking! I usually share (if I can't donate) GoFundMe pages for funeral, hospital, disaster costs, etc. So when I saw it, my jaw dropped! The audacity...This is why my generation is frowned upon.

I've seen them for just about everything so I'm not even surprised. People make them for anything because there's always someone willing to donate.

Ugh gross. I don't know why I'm surprised by people anymore though. I've seen people start a GoFundMe to help them pay for college. I'll never understand it.

Aside from being completely tacky, the logistics sound like a nightmare. You would have to invite random FB Joe that donated ten dollars, wouldn't you? That seems wild to me.

My brother and his ex wife originally started one. My whole family was appalled. They took it down after about a week after raising about twenty bucks. I just don't understand why people think that is ok.

Yikes. Also curious if they have received any donations to their cause?

@Ashley C I'm totally with you....I feel like the gofundme is only okay in certain situations (NOT WEDDINGS). I donated some money to an old friend because her dog got into a car accident and pets getting hurt and not being able to get better without the vet tugs at my heart :'( I did see a girl I grew up with started a gofundme for like $1k after she graduated college for a european trip....It looked so pathetic =/ It kept popping up on facebook and it was still at like $50/1000 after weeks...It's like really?? Shouldn't you be getting a job and using your new degree to make money but instead you're asking everyone on FB to spot you....I just don't get it!
