$700 for ALTERATIONS….How much did you pay?

QueenThompson, on February 12, 2015 at 9:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 68

My coworker is a bride to be and she informed me that she paid $1400 for her dress and $700 for alterations (YIKES). My budget is $1000 for my dress so I’m wondering if I need to down my dress budget to $300 and use the rest for alterations lol.

$212 for cups, hem, and straps added. It depends on your dress (lace, for instance, is more expensive) and what needs to be done.

    ETA: Oh and bustle.

Mine was roughly $400 for hem & bustle. Lots of tulle on my dress.

I paid 80 to add a bustle and 50 to steam it. No other alterations were needed.

I am possibly paying $700, if I lose weight and fit in my dress I will be paying $500, but that's because I'm adding a sash and removing the train.

I bought mine at a sample sale so I have to work with an already created gown.

The lady who is doing my alterations is charging me $85 for taking in around my rib cage, adding boning for my shapeware and a bustle. I was super shocked after seeing what other people have paid! If you don't have major alterations, it shouldn't be that much.

My dress is lace, and I paid $120 for alterations. But, I didn't get anything major. I only had the dress hemmed and also taken in along the thigh area because it was kind of boxy there orginally.

OMG Janeen, I first read your comment as $212 for cups alone! I hope mine is that low. I think I just need cups, hem, and bustle. Haven't had a fitting yet, but I have tried my actual dress on.

Lol no, the cups were $10 lol. My hem had 3 layers so it was pricier than some. The straps were cheap. And my bustle was complicated as well for the 3 layers.

She charged me way less than I thought she would. Plus the same seamstress custom added applique to my flower girl's dress to match mine and added applique to my veil for only $150. I'm sending them a gift basket lol.

I just put 800 in my savings for alterations and I'm praying that's enough. If I come out to be under, then that will be super!

My alterations were $225 for hem, bustle and taking it in a smidge right under the arm.

When I bought my dress they quoted me about $250. I just had my first fitting (with a different seamstress, bought my dress in another city), and it's probably going to be closer to $500. I have a lace, scalloped hem so that alone is $300. Cups are $35, bustle is $25 for the first point and $15 for everything after, plus I'm getting an under and an over bustle due to the style of dress. I also need it taken in at the bust, and she said to absolutely not lose any weight before the wedding or she'll have to take in the waist and hips. Funny thing is the shop tried to get me to order a size bigger, which would have added another couple hundred in cost to take in.

My advice if you want to save on alteration costs is to buy a plainer dress. One without a lace hem is a lot easier to alter, one without a train doesn't need a bustle, one that you can wear an existing bra with doesn't need cups, etc.

I paid $200 for it to be taken in the whole way down, the overlay hemmed on the train area, steamed and pressed, and a bustle (technically two bustles, lining and then the chiffon overlay had a separate bustle).

I paid $65 total. That included taking the top in a small amount and my bustle, 3 over/2 under. No hem needed--apparently I picked the perfect height of shoes!
