7.5 months pregnant bridesmaid dress issue

Aly, on February 9, 2016 at 12:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

So one of my bridesmaids will be 7.5 months pregnant at our wedding. We picked out the dresses a while ago before she got pregnant and the dress doesn't come in maternity. Since announcing her pregnancy, she has returned the first size dress and ordered the next size up 3 times now. She is now up to the largest size they have and telling me that it doesn't zip. The color of the dress is blush but its more of a rosy blush, so its hard to match. It's also tulle. I asked her to search for a maternity dress in blush tulle but we are having a hard time finding one. She is also telling me she doesn't want to stand out and look different than everyone else. I suggested maybe not being in the wedding, (in a really nice way). She didn't like that and said she's never been in a wedding and has always wanted to. ARGH. What are my options here?!?! I have a total of 7 maids, they will all be in the same dress. What would you do?

Has she taken the dress to a seamstress to see what can be done about letting it out so it'll zip? I would check that first, if they say they can't do anything then you'll know you need a completely different dress.

Have they all ordered their dresses/can anyone return theirs? Maybe if one or two people had a different dress she wouldn't feel as bad.

I would take the dress to a seamstress asap and see if they can add a panel in the back or something.

I don't really see any other choice than finding a maternity dress in the right color, but widen your search to at least chiffon instead of just tulle and you might have more luck. If she's trying to suggest that ALL of the BMs should buy new dresses so that they can match, that's absurd, she'll have to get over that.

She's pregnant, she will "stand out" no matter what.

Tell her to get a dress in the same color, that coordinates well with the others and call it a day.

What is the shape/style of the dress? Even if it doesn't come in maternity an empire waist will give her more room in the belly area. I'd definitely talk to a seamstress.

@Carlyle- She did. She said the boning in the top sits too low and hits her stomach. The seamstress said they can't remove the boning or fix that issue.

@Staci- yea, everyone has bought theirs. I've tried to find some similar dresses, but she doesn't like any of them... EEEK! It's an ongoing daily battle. I'm about to give up! There's so much other stuff to worry about but at the same time, this is not her fault.

@Rebecca thanks about the recommendation of chiffon. It is similar. Ill broaden our search with that fabric

Good seamstresses can give her options (a corset back with modesty panel could give her an extra 4-8 inches), but they may not be cheap. Have you tried mix n match sites like Azazie?

She's going to have to get over 'not standing out'. Being almost 8 months pregnant will already stand out! She might as well embrace it and dress comfortably.

My bridesmaid is also 7.5 months pregnant. We called Alfred Angelo to speak with their consultants on which dresses they recommended, other than the maternity dress. They said gave us a few that would work based on where the waist is cut. She opted for the maternity dress (and looks adorable in it!).

You may just need to pick the new dress and let her know what it is. If you picked the dress for all of the other girls I don't see why you shouldn't get the final say on her dress, if she doesn't like she doesn't have to purchase it; however she's not in the bridal party then.

ETA: I'm not promoting kicking anyone out of the bridal party...nor do I think you would even do that. She would be the person making the decision if she can't accept your dress selection.

I'd just try to find a dress with a similar color, if you're having difficulty finding the same color and fabric. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions all! Good points, she will stand out regardless, but hopefully we can find something similar in shade of blush.

My oldest sister was about 7 months pregnant for our other sisters wedding, we took pictures of the dress the other bridesmaids were getting to a seamstress and she made my sisters dress from scratch to match the rest. I'm sure it wasn't exactly the same, but you couldn't tell unless you were looking very closely for differences.

Maybe she can change the dress to a corset it will be a different then the others but only by changing the zipper.

Boning and pregnancy don't mix. It will only get worse. Look for the same color in an empire waist. She's just going to have to deal with standing out.

Perhaps she can have a dress made in the same fabric as the other maids. I've been in weddings where some of the larger ladies had to have their dresses made and they fit in very well.

    Good luck!

Jenny yoo has tulle maternity styles (one of my BM will be wearing one). Their blush color is a ready to ship color too that you can get from BHLDN. ETA Nordstrom doesn't have the maternity as a ready to ship option - it looks like they are made to order.

That is bs that the seamstress can't remove the boning. Mine did on my wedding dress!! It looked like I had Madonna boobs...... Tell her to take it to another seamstress, and like PP said, shes gonna stand out no matter what. Also try the rental bridesmaid dress websites, our friend who was 9 months pregnant at our friends wedding was able to rent a maternity dress.
