6 year old Flower girl-too old?

Lydia, on April 12, 2017 at 10:12 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 75

Hi friends, Is a 6 year old too old for a flower girl? I informally asked a relative to have her daughter be our flower girl immediately after getting engaged without really thinking about it. Then my mom mentioned she might be too old by the time we get married. She'll turn 6 two months before we wed. How old is too old?

Not too old.. good age actually.. the little ones get un-reliable day of when they get shy/tired/nervous etc. Mine was a little over 5 at ours.

I'd say if you already asked her then you can't un-ask. That said, I think six is fine! She needs to be old enough to be able to throw the flowers (mine was 4 though I've seen younger work fine too).

6 is absolutely fine for a flower girl! And there's probably a much lower probability of stage fright than if she were too young.

I don't understand why you would've already asked when your wedding isn't for over a year... but 6 years old is a great age for a flower girl.

As long as she feels special and wants to do it, she isn't too old.

I think kids much older than 6 or so stop wanting to participate in that role.

Mine is going to be 8. She has always wanted to be a flower girl and this was the first opportunity for her. I think it will be fine.

Definitely not too old. We are having FH daughter who is 7 and she's really excited.

Ours are one and maybe walking, almost six and almost eight. The ring bearer will be a month away from four. Other than the baby who's tbd on game day if she'll walk (she loves chasing after her brother and cousins so maybe!) they are all super excited!

@flightyflutist like I said it was an informal discussion with her Mom who is also a good friend. I knew she'd be excited about the idea. Anyway, thanks for all the great responses. I'm over thinking things per usual but you all are right.

Not too old at all. Mine will be 7 at the time. I've seen 8 year olds do it too, but after that, I think they're too old.

Well, I guess mine is going to be "too old" because she will be 9. (she's shy but her big sister is pumping her up for it. so she's getting excited) :-)

I agree with everyone saying it's a good age! I think 9 going on 10 is too old...but then again who cares people have their grandmas tossing petals these days and it's still really cute!

Mine will be 6 and 7, not too old! We are asking my niece in person next month, but we asked my FH's this past weekend and she was really excited about it. My only concern is finding her a dress, since she is also tall and overweight.

If my niece feels like she's too old, then she doesn't have to to it, but I honestly don't think that will be a problem.

My nephew is 8 and he is going to be our ring bearer. He was super excited when we asked!

It all depends on the individual kid.
